Berkshire man inspires charity run
|
A UK charity is inviting runners to Berkshire this Easter to take part in a run to raise money for asthma sufferers.
Asthma UK is holding the ten-kilometre run at Dorney Lake, Windsor on Easter Sunday, April 15th. The charity says the event was partly inspired by John Kelly, from Reading, whose partner Jeni died from an asthma attack recently.
It is the first time that the event has been held and organisers are hoping that the Berkshire beauty spot will motivate people to don their running shoes and give it a go.
Mr Kelly said: "Jeni and I had talked about running a 5K or a 10K together in the future, but unfortunately she never got the chance.
"I'm really excited that the female winner of the first ever Asthma UK 10K will receive the Jeni Allnutt trophy - hopefully this will help put Asthma UK on the map and will be a fitting tribute to Jeni."
Surprisingly, one in five of the UK Olympic team in Athens suffered from asrthma, showing that the illness can be controlled when treated properly.
Gary McGinn, Asthma UK's events manager, was delighted to be bringing the event to Berkshire.
"Asthma UK is really excited to be holding this inaugural 10k run at Dorney Lake, which is the world-class venue for the Olympic rowing and canoeing events at the 2012 games," he said.
"The facilities are superb and we have activities on the day for all the family. To celebrate Easter Saturday there will be an easter egg hunt in Dorney Lake Arboretum."
