Berkshire school is hatrick hero
In what is thought to be an unprecedented honour, a Berkshire school has been awarded its third specialism status from the government.

Kennet School, in Thatcham, was given the status of Technology College in September 2000. It was then given the opportunity of achieving a second specialism - an honour it fulfilled when it was awarded specialism for theatre arts in March 2005.

Then, just before Christmas, the school was approached by the Department for Education and Skills who offered it a third specialism for modern languages.

The third award brings with it £500,000 extra funding from the government over the next four years.

Headmaster Paul Dick, was naturally delighted with the award. He said: "We understand that for a school to have three specialisms is almost unique in the whole country. It will bring further financial resource to the school and great benefits to the pupils."

He added: "Modern Languages has always been strong at Kennet School and we are delighted to have this recognition.

"The school has long encouraged all pupils to take a Modern Language and this will enable us to strengthen and widen our Modern Languages offering to pupils of all ages."
