Crossrail could boost Slough business, says MP
|
A Berkshire MP has said that the proposed Crossrail project that would improve Berkshire's connections to London could reinforce Slough as a business location, the Slough Observer has reported.
Fiona Mactaggart, who is a Home Office minister as well as the MP for Slough, backed the £10 billion scheme, which is timetabled to start running by 2013.
She said: "Slough is a very attractive location for business. Crossrail will offer the opportunity for this to be reinforced.
"I believe the idea creates some real opportunity for Slough. Slough has always been dependant on its position – so close to Heathrow, the M4 and the M25 – to attract business to the town."
Not everyone is happy with the proposed scheme, however. One Liverpool MP reportedly objected to such a large amount of money being spent solely in the south.
Alistair Darling, the Transport Secretary, was also cautious about the project. "This is a huge project, it is hugely expensive, it will be a massive engineering enterprise and we must have a proposition that is actually deliverable," he said.
If completed, the Crossrail would run from Maidenhead right through London and terminate at Abbey Wood in east London and Shenfield in Essex.
Ms Mactaggart admitted that the project has a long way to go before it becomes a reality. She said: "So far the stage that we are at is that we have had a Parliamentary discussion, but there are still many ways that people can intervene."
