School meals better in Berkshire
West Berkshire Council could be in line to lead the way when it comes to the current concern for healthy school meals.

Councillors will be asked on Thursday to approve proposals to spend an extra £270,000 over a three-year period on providing top-notch nosh for the district's pupils.

The extra funds come from the Government's Target Schools Meal Grant. Since the grant was announced at the end of last year, the council has been furiously deciding how to use the money.

The proposal offers training for catering staff, school staff and pupils on how to obtain the most out of good food, and also suggests increased spending on better ingredients.

A healthy schools programme has already been launched by the council, which encourages schools to embrace fitness and diet.

Executive councillor, Graham Pask, said: "We are committed to ensuring that healthy meals are available in our schools to those who want them, and we have already achieved much to ensure this.

"We also have to develop an efficient and effective management of the whole process as well as value for money, and that's what the council's executive will be looking to agree this week."
