Businessman's Olympian effort earns OBE
|
A businessman from Ascot has earned himself the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in this year's New Year's Honours List for his involvement in London's successful 2012 Olympic bid, the Slough Express has reported.
Michael Power, who lives with his wife in Ascot, was appointed as the chief operating officer (COO) of the London bid team back in 2003.
Mr Power's commitment to the 2012 London Olympics did not end when the city was announced as the winner back in July. He is now the COO of the newly formed London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOGOC).
His new role means that he is responsible for the staging of the games.
He said: "When we started it was against all the odds. I don't think many people had much faith we would win."
When the announcement came, Mr Power said that it was one of a handful of events that he would remember for the rest of his life. The award of an OBE was recognition of what the Olympics will bring to the country, he said.
He added: "What it represents is the recognition of having done something for the country which is the whole point. The reason I did this was because I wanted to give something back to the country and make a difference to the community. This is now going to help a very deprived part of the East End."
