Royal Berkshire cleanest hospital in Britain
Royal Berkshire Hospital has been assessed as the cleanest NHS hospital in the country.

Inspectors gave the county's hospital a cleanliness rating of 99 per cent, giving it a joint share of the top spot out of all the NHS hospitals visited between July and September of this year.

The award of such a high score comes after the hospital introduced several measures to make cleaning easier. Materials for curtains, blinds and furniture have been chosen for easy cleaning and skirting boards designed to prevent dust collecting in corners.

Professor Ann Sheen, chief executive of the Royal Berkshire and Battle Hospitals NHS Trust Hospital, said that the excellent results were the result of hard work, training and collaboration.

"Our teams work incredibly hard to maintain high standards" she said. "It is good to know that their work has been recognised nationally in this way."

The inspectors from the Healthcare Commission arrived at the hospital without warning. The unannounced evaluations have been carried out in response to worries that cleanliness standards were falling in hospitals, leading to infections.

The head of operations at the Healthcare Commission, Simon Gillespie, asserted that this was not what the outcome of these assessments suggested. He said: "We have found some excellent performance. It is a myth to say all our hospitals are dirty."
