Reading station gets safe
Reading's railway station has been given a national award for safety and security.

The station, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the 19th century, has been awarded Secure Station status after it improved facilities to meet standards of safe design and security management.

The station now has 24 hour CCTV, security patrol and the staff have been trained in how to deal with security threats and help vulnerable passengers.

Station manager Sonia Crosby said: "This is a seal of approval for the work we've done to enhance security and safety at the station.

"Although crime on the railways is extremely low and we are continually looking for ways to make our stations and trains safer, this award is about addressing customers' perceptions and reducing their fear of crime."

Reading West MP Martin Salter, who is to present the award and uses the station daily on his journey to Westminster, said: "Safety and security are top priorities for all rail users and I hope this Secure Station status will help reassure local people who use Reading station."
