Berks set for Olympic boom
|
Berkshire could benefit from the 2012 London Olympics with extra cash rolling into the county.
The predictions come from councillor Clive Baskerville, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council sports spokesman, as Eton's Dorney lake will host the rowing and kayaking events.
The Windsor Express reports how he told a conference that Windsor will be facing a tourist trade boom when the Olympics come.
He said: "The benefits to us - and the nation as a whole - will be huge."
Councillor Baskerville also described how the games will bring added bonuses encouraging young people to be active.
He added: "The biggest prize would not be gold medals, but a fitter and more focused generation of young people, invigorated by being part of a truly international event."
The £17 million Dorney Lake is owned by Eton College but is open for use by the community and over 100 schools and rowing clubs use the lake along with the national squads.
People of all ages are encouraged to the facilities either to walk around the grounds of the 400-acre or get active and enjoy rowing.
