Green light to Newbury makeover
|
Plans to give the centre of Newbury a new look has been given the thumbs up.
The town's market place will be pedestrianised and will provide a venue for public events after West Berkshire Council's ruling executive gave the go-ahead.
Work should begin on the £900,000 scheme next summer and the market will be relocated to Northbrook Street while the improvements are taking place.
Councillor Emma Webster said: "I believe the project will bring social and commercial advantages that will further enhance this emerging cultural quarter of the town."
During public consultation three quarters of respondents said they were in favour of the changes and it is hope they will enhance the character of Newbury and bring new life to the traditional focus of the town.
Final details of the scheme, such as whether or not Wharf Street will be closed to traffic, are to be agreed before the work takes place next year.
