Reading plans Hexagon replacement
|
Reading Borough Council is looking to replace the Hexagon theatre with an arts and ecological learning centre.
The council is turning to the national lottery for £25 million for the project and to the community to help draw up the plans.
It is hoped the centre will be constructed on the Hill's Meadow car park.
Catherine Wilton, lead councillor for culture, told the BBC: "We need to replace the Hexagon with a modern venue suitable for all kinds of shows but we don't just want the same again.
"Other towns and cities across the country will be bidding for this money so it is vitally important that the people of Reading support this project."
It will form part of the Caversham Lock area redevelopment that includes plans for the listed King's Meadow Pool, hopefully bringing it back to its original use with a new café/restaurant.
King's Meadow will be protected and enhanced as a major area of prime public open space on the banks of the River Thames and an important habitat for wildlife, plus space will be set aside for sporting events, carnivals and festivals.
Caversham Lock Island is proposed to have a new visitor centre and View Island will remain undeveloped with the creation of reed beds and angling opportunities.
