15 June 2010
Tuesday 2:30 Queen Anne Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1) 1 Mile Straight.

Founded in 1840, the Queen Anne Stakes commemorates the monarch who established racing at Ascot in 1711. Awarded Group 3 status in 1971, it became Group 2 in 1984. Elevated to Group 1 in 2002 the race now attracts the season’s leading older milers from across Europe.

Paco Boy won this last year and won a cracking Lockinge last month SO together with Rip Van Winkle and Goldikova all equally challenging and race fit, which is to be first past the post? Even Rip Van Winkle’s trainer Aidan O’Brien says he’s worried about his horse’s fitness which if it is to be believed means that the choice is between the other two. Although Paco Boy won well last month the race was not of this standard which leaves GOLDIKOVA, fresh from the Prix d’Ispahan victory to take the spoils in my opinion.

Main bet GOLDIKOVA 13/8 to win.

Tuesday 3.05 King's Stand Stakes [British Leg of The Global Sprint Challenge] (Class 1) (Group 2). 5f.

First run on the round course in 1837 but becoming the King’s Stand Plate in 1901 for 2 year olds. Today the race remains a sprint, although now run over the minimum trip of 5 furlongs for 3 year olds and upwards.

3.05 King's Stand Stakes [British Leg of The Global Sprint Challenge] (Class 1) (Group 1). 5f.

The Australians have a good strike rate here: Choisir 2003, Takeover Target 2006, Miss Andretti 2007, and Scenic Blast 2009 – and probably Nicconi today. NICCONI is well suited to 5fl and has won 6 out of 15 starts so could make the frame here today despite his struggle in Australia recently to land two of the spoils. This may have been due to 6fl proving too long whereas Nicconi is an out-and-out 5fl specialist. Dettori is aboard so Nicconi is likely to enjoy the shorter trip. However, as a good option for a slightly better price, I would include Kingsgate Native 7/2 to be in the frame but can’t see myself backing him.

Main bet: NICCONI 3/1 to win.

Tuesday 3.50 St James's Palace Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1) (Entire Colts) 1 Mile Round.

Named after the Tudor Royal residence, the inaugural running of the St James’s Palace Stakes in 1834 was a walkover for the Derby winner Plenipotentiary. The race features the best milers from the Classic generation, often attracting horses that have run in the English, French and Irish 2000 Guineas, with a succession of famous winners.

A difficult one this. With 50% strike rate on wins from 6 starts there is no doubt that CANFORD CLIFFS imposes a real threat over Makfi, Dick Turpin and Aidan O’Brein trained Steinbeck. Steinbeck 7/1 is a real threat as Aidan O’Brein holds a clutch of wins here with 6 in the last 10 years. Canford Cliffs won the Irish 2,000 Guineas in style but needs to settle well to win this. If he does then this Richard Hannon trained colt should pull it out of the hat. Don’t be surprised though if Makfi isn’t far behind! Mafki trounced Canford Cliffs at Newmarket even though Canford Cliffs won the Coventry Stakes last year.

Main bet: CANFORD CLIFFS 9/4 to win OR Steinbeck 7/1 e/w.

Tuesday 4:25 Coventry Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2). 6f.

First run in 1890 and named after the 9th Earl of Coventry, this is the first Group contest of the year for juveniles and provides an ideal opportunity to assess whether they will be able to perform at the highest level.

Richard Hannon’s horse STRONG SUIT is much fancied for this race although by no means a certainty. Strong Suit made a creditable performance at Newbury last month and in good time. If showing the same speed of foot should win today.

Main bet: STRONG SUIT 2/1 to win

Tuesday 5.00 Ascot Stakes (Handicap) (Class 2) 2mls 4f. 4 year olds+.

First run in 1839, the Ascot Stakes is run over 2½ miles. Like the Gold Cup and Queen Alexandra Stakes, this race provides a thorough test of stamina. It is one of just three races at the Royal Ascot meeting in which the field passes the winning post twice and attracts horses that have run in the early season staying handicaps, most notable the Chester Cup.

This is an absolute minefield to choose from and any one will do. Jane Chapple Hyam trained Judgethe moment won this last year at 13/2. She trains Rangefinder this year, a 22/1 shot if lightning strikes twice! However, to be more sensible I would look for GHIMAAR , Junior or Perfect Shot to be in the frame.

Main bet GHIMAAR 5/1 to win OR Perfect Shot 7/1 e/w.

Tuesday 5.35 Windsor Castle Stakes (Class 1) (Listed Race) 5f

First run in 1839 over the straight mile course, this race was originally designed to attract 3 year old colts and fillies that had competed in the early season Classics. Now run over the minimum distance of 5 furlongs and restricted to two year olds, the race was been promoted to Listed status for the first time in 2004.

2008 saw a 100/1 winner romp in which shows what a pin picker this race is! Last year saw 33/1 winner Strike The Tiger romp past the post. So leave this alone I say, but if you must then you may as well go for any one of two, namely: Aiden O’ Brien trained PETRONIUS MAXIMUMUS 20/1 or STONE OF FOLCA 10/1as any! Stone of Folca showed some form with a good second place at Windsor and may have more to come.

No Main bets: CRAZY each ways: Petronius Maximus 20/1 OR Stone of Folca 10/1 e/w.

GOOD LUCK!
