2.35 Norfolk Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2). 2 year olds. 5f
First run in 1843, this race was formerly known as the New Stakes and staged over a distance of just under 4 furlongs. Named after the Duke of Norfolk, Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot between 1945 and 1972, it became the Norfolk Stakes in 1973. It is one of the first Group races of the season for juveniles.
SOUTH CENTRAL won impressively by 13 lengths at Carlisle recently but did the opposition flatter his ability, I think not, but? FLASHMANS PAPERS will likely go off favourite following an impressive June Ascot win but it could be BAYCAT that’s waiting to pounce after rain last night and having previously slain some pretty useful opposition in the Ascot Conditions Stake at Ascot in April, or could it be WAFFLE with Dettori aboard out to test his calibre following his Leicester run? However, I’m going to mention SKID SOLO @ 33/1for just one reason namely that Peter Chapple-Hyam as a 100% record in the last 10 seasons and has won this race for the last two years; so I just mention it for interest.

3.10 Ribblesdale Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (Fillies) 3 year olds. 1m 4f
Named after the 4th Baron Ribblesdale, Master of the Buckhounds between 1892 and 1895. first run in 1919, this race was originally staged over a mile for 3 and 4 year olds. Now restricted to the Classic generation only and run over the extended distance of a mile and a half, the winner of the Ribblesdale Stakes is invariably a top class filly.
Two of the last 3 winners have been sent off @ 22/1 & 25/1 & favourite won just once in 10yrs. So not easy this. John Gosden’s MICHITA will like Ascot’s track as won’t have to cope with the hills at Epsom which did for him last time out. ARTHUR’S GIRL is a bit of a punt but the way it’s been going at Ascot so far, who knows? ARTHUR’S GIRL won nicely at Salisbury last time out.

Next best: ARTHUR’S GIRL 10/1 each way.
3.50 Gold Cup (Class 1) (Group 1). 2m 4f
Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup is the oldest and one of the most prestigious races at Royal Ascot. Staged over the marathon trip of two and a half miles, the race is a stiff test of stamina and attracts the very best staying horses.
Only one horse, the great French stayer Sagaro, has won 3 Gold Cups (1975, 76, 77). The Aiden O’Brein-trained YEATS will bid to emulate him today. There is growing support behind Andre Fabre’s raider COASTAL PATH who has shown a better level of ability in his 6 unbeaten runs, which suggests YEATS will need to be at this best to claim a hat-trick today. Pitting against him is GEORDIELAND who ran in this race last year. I wrote then: “GEORDIELAND, trained by Jamie Osborne, is no slouch and rode 2nd to Sergeant Cecil in the Yorkshire Cup.” This year, he thinks he’s got the handle on YEATS and thinks him beatable. SAGARA is also Yeat’s stablemate and finished 3rd in the Arc last year, so could be worth watching or with a small punt @ 20/1!

4.20 Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 3 year olds. 1m 4f
First run in 1928 over the straight mile of the Royal Hunt Cup course, this race still retains similar conditions today. Open to 3 year old colts and geldings only, the Britannia Handicap is apways guaranteed to provide a thrilling finish.
FLAWED GENIUS looks sure to go well. Trained by Sir Michael Stoute FLAWED GENIUS really didn’t shine last time out but is widely acknowledged to possess enough form to win this. LOVE GALORE Hamilton impressive win, could follow up.
Main bet: FLAWED GENIUS 8/1 each way.
Next best: LOVE GALORE 33/1.
4.55 Hampton Court Stakes (Class 1) (Listed Race) 3 year olds. 1m 2f
Originally registered as the New Stakes, this race was part of the traditional Heath Day card on the Saturday after Royal Ascot. It was enhanced in value and re-named The Hampton Court Stakes, after the Tudor Royal Residence, as part of the Golden jubilee celebrations in 2002, when the meeting was first extended to 5 days. This is a listed event, run over 10 furlongs and restricted to 3 year olds only.
UNNEFER looks up to the task and Henry Cecil deserves a win for his stable as shows impressive progress having notched up 2 wins out of 3. DR FAUSTUS looks the threat but, much to prove COLLECTION could provide a surprise.
Main bet: UNNEFER 10/1 each way.
Next best COLLECTION 8/1 each way.
5.30 King George V Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 1mile 4f
Like the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes on the opening day of the meeting, this is another handicap for middle-distance performers, staged over one and a half miles. The inaugural running was in July 1946 as part of the first fixture staged at the racecourse outside of the Royal Meeting, before the race was transferred to Royal Ascot in 1948.
Mark Johnsonston has pedigree in this race having notched up a 50% win rate over the past 6 years and enters MISSIONER today. With Alan Munroe riding he could be in line for the prize. Sir Michael Stoute’s COLONY was a strong contender in the London Gold Cup is next best as possible longer trip today will suit. INDIAN DAYS could go well @ 20/1 following Redcar show although up 9lb in the weights so may be worth a small e/w?
