ROYAL ASCOT FORECASTED WINNERS FOR FRIDAY
2.35 Albany Stakes (Class 1) (Group 3) (Fillies) 6f
The $½ million Sander Camillo is my pick for a number of reasons. Firstly at Newmarket the ground was too soft for her wich gave Biocoastal (also running in this race) the fuller advantage – that won’t be the case today. Secondly, Franki Dettori is aboard and he hasn’t had a winner yet, so his Italian ire is up! Thirdly she’s a good e/w bet anyway.
Main bet: Sander Camillo 6/1 e/w.
History: This race was first run in 2002 as the Henry Carnarvon Stakes, honouring The Queen’s late racing manager. Restricted to 2 year old fillies only, this Listed 6 furling event provides on of the first opportunities of the season for promising types to prove their ability, potentially using the race as a springboard to Pattern company.
3.10 King Edward V11 Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings) 1m 4f
Papal Bull will be out to reverse his Derby failure and with Keiren Fallon aboard looks a threat, however, I’ll ride with Red Rocks with Dettori riding who will be out to achieve an early double. Red Rocks was very impressive at Windsor recently and is on the upgrade. Besides he fits all key trends today.
Main bet: Red Rocks 11/2. Next best: Papal Bull 11/4.
History: Formerly known, and often colloquially referred to, as the ‘Ascot Derby’, this race was inaugurated in 1834 and regularly featured horses of both sexes that had competed in the middle-distance Classics. First run as the King Edward VII Stakes in 1926 and restricted to 3 year old colts and geldings only, this race still continues to attract horses that have competed in the Derby at Epsom.
3.50 Coronation Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1) (Fillies) 1m round.
The Godolphin stable is not in form at the moment but Silica’s Sister, who was 4th behind Speciosa (also running in this race) in the 1,000 guineas, may reverse that today. I know this sounds like a Dettori fan club but he’s aboard Silica’s Sister, and who knows this could be his 3rd win in succession. Franki has managed 7 at Ascot, so it’s not impossible for him to achieve the hat-trick. Channon trained Flashy Wings is likely to give her most to do.
Main bet: Silica’s Sister 9/1 e/w. Next best: Flashy Wings 8/1 e/w.
History: First run in 1840, the Coronation Stakes was founded to commerorate the crowning of Queen Victoria in 1838. This mile event is the fillies’ equivalent of the St James’s Palace Stakes and attracts horses that have run well in the English, Irish and French Guineas.
4.25 Wolferton Handicap (Class 1) (Listed Race) 1m 2f
John Gosden trained Wild Savannah won well at Newmarket recently and looks much improved and is well matched in the field. Besides the horse is well drawn at 9 and is unlikely to notice a 4lb rise in the weights.
Main bet: Wild Savannah 6/1 e/w.
History: First run in this form in 2002 as part of the 5 day Royal Ascot meeting to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. This is a Listed handicap over 10 furlongs for 4 year olds and upwards.
4.55 Queen's Vase (Class 1) (Group 3) 2m
Galient won a Newmarket maiden in April and is a stayer, which is a much needed quality for 2 miles. Soapy Danger could indeed be the danger.
Main bet: Galient 3/1. Next best: Soapy Danger 7/2.
History: Names after Queen Victoria and first run in 1838, this race became the King’s Vase in 1903 before reverting to its original name on the succession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Run over 2 miles the Group 3 contest provides a thorough test of stamina for 3 year olds and winners of this race often go on to compete in the Gold Cup in future years.
5.30 King George V Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 1mile 4f
This is such a competitive race but Salute the General who didn’t like Epsom but may find Ascot a better pitch, could be poised to surprise at long odds as could Lake Poet. Lake Poet is showing improved form. As the winner is really impossible to forecast these two probably represent potential each way savers!
Main bet: Salute the General 14/1. Next best: Lake Poet 12/1.
History: Like the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes on the opening day of the meeting, this is another handicap for middle-distance performers, staged over one and a half miles. The inaugural running was in July 1946 as part of the first fixture staged at the racecourse outside of the Royal Meeting, before the race was transferred to Royal Ascot in 1948.
GOOD LUCK!
