Renew your positive mental attitude |
I’m going to use an American term and ask you to ‘listen up now’!
What is the difference between a positive mental attitude and a self fulfilling prophesy? Well, the answer is clear. When everybody around you is talking gloom and doom it’s very hard indeed to think of anything else. Shops and being shut. Large names are disappearing. Savings deposits are being decimated. The pound is plummeting. Your mortgage may be cheaper but the extra money lower interest rates may put in your pocket is then offset by other inflationary pressures, and so it goes on. At the moment I am seeing a great many more businesses than I can ever remember visiting. They want me to talk to them about marketing crisis management. They’ve no money to spend, of course, but there must be some way I can help them before Armageddon strikes. They are all victims of a self fulfilling prophesy and in some way feel peculiarly comfortable about being a member of a growing club. The club of believable doom-mongers. But there is an alternative belief. This, ladies and gentlemen is my third recession, which means I really do know something about recessions. The only way to beat a recession is to trade yourself through it. Easier said than done, you may say. After all, if you have no customers how’s the money going to come in? You can’t generate income from people or companies who are sitting on their hands. Well, one principal answer is to sell the right thing about your company in a way which shows your prospect that by using your service that customer benefits too. So often companies are selling completely the wrong message. For example, you may think it’s your magnificent product or service that the world wants when in fact it probably isn’t. Your particular product or service is doubtless available anywhere, so what makes you so special? Well, that’s exactly it. What is it that makes you so special? It could be you yourself and suddenly you realise you’ve never sold your personality. It could be a large price differential, and that you’ve never bothered to sit down and work out the difference you can offer against prices flagged by the competition. There are many other subtle differences, of course, but once you’ve realised why your so special, then an alternative belief springs into action; namely positive mental attitude. You do, of course, need someone who can help you identify what is lurking in the wood hidden from the trees; who can guide you knowledgeably to realising your essential and most sought after difference. But once you’ve recreated your outlook and gained a new enthusiasm, you’ll be surprised and probably amazed at the difference your renewed positive mental attitude will make to both you and your business.
