2.30 Albany Stakes (Class 1) (Group 3) (Fillies) 6f
This race was first run in 2002 as the Henry Carnarvon Stakes, honouring The Queen’s late racing manager. Restricted to 2 year old fillies only, this Listed 6 furling event provides on of the first opportunities of the season for promising types to prove their ability, potentially using the race as a springboard to Pattern company.
CUIS GHAIRE will take all the beating. She is considered to be the “best 2 yr old filly we have seen so far this season,” remarks his trainer Jim Bolger, She’s in the top form she showed when winning as Naas in a Group 3. I can’t see anything to pit against her so if she doesn’t win we’ll have to put it down to an off day.
Main bet: CUIS GHAIRE Evens.
3.05 King Edward V11 Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings) 1m 4f
Formerly known, and often colloquially referred to, as the ‘Ascot Derby’, this race was inaugurated in 1834 and regularly featured horses of both sexes that had competed in the middle-distance Classics. First run as the King Edward VII Stakes in 1926 and restricted to 3 year old colts and geldings only, this race still continues to attract horses that have competed in the Derby at Epsom.
A very impressive horse in this race is CONDUIT. At Epsom, jockey Ryan Moore kept him at the rear of the field until asking for a run. And what a run! From near last to first and then winning by 6 lengths has got to make CONDUIT a horse to be seriously considered. CITY LEADER is also one to consider following an impressive 1ml3f win at Goodwood, but this race will need even greater effort. . MOIQUEN hasn’t shone recently due in part to running a series of races in quick succession but running fresh today could give her a chance. Would need to improve to win this but at 16/1 may reward e/w.
Main bet: CONDUIT 7/2.
Next best: CITY LEADER 8/1.
3.45 Coronation Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1) (Fillies) 1m round.
First run in 1840, the Coronation Stakes was founded to commerorate the crowning of Queen Victoria in 1838. This mile event is the fillies’ equivalent of the St James’s Palace Stakes and attracts horses that have run well in the English, Irish and French Guineas.
SPACIOUS is a very strong filly and may go off favourite in this but following her dazzling York triumph and could prove the better of INFALLIBLE – both horses from Cheveley Park Stud. LUSH LASHES failed to shine at Epsom. The stamina just wasn’t there after having been asked for an effort. However, trainer Bolger is not disheartened and feels she can shine again!
Main bet: SPACIOUS 3/1.
Next best: LUSH LASHES 7/1 each way.
4.20 Wolferton Handicap (Class 1) (Listed Race) 1m 2f
First run in this form in 2002 as part of the 5 day Royal Ascot meeting to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. This is a Listed handicap over 10 furlongs for 4 year olds and upwards.
BUSHMAN is very progressive and could defy a serious rise in the ratings and being upped 13lbs. Trainer Luca Cumani must be smarting after Bankable’s poor performance but could be encouraged by MONTE ALTO’s Zetland Gold Cup run at Redcar recently.
Main bet: BUSHMAN 4/1.
Next best: MONTE ALTO 5/1 each way.
4.55 Queen's Vase (Class 1) (Group 3) 2m
Names after Queen Victoria and first run in 1838, this race became the King’s Vase in 1903 before reverting to its original name on the succession of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Run over 2 miles the Group 3 contest provides a thorough test of stamina for 3 year olds and winners of this race often go on to compete in the Gold Cup in future years.
Both Sir Michael Stoute’s PATAKI and EBADIYAN deserve the utmost respect. PATAKI will rally to the extra half mile this race affords and will go off a worthy favourite. PATKAI could be up for the St Ledger. EBADIYAN has a bit more to do in this race than his recent Gowan Park run but deserves consideration.
Main bet: PATAKI 6/4.
Next best: EBADIYAN 5/1 each way.
5.30 Buckingham Palace Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 7 furlongs.
A new race introduced as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002, when the meeting was first extended to 5 days. Staged on the straight course over 7 furlongs, the final race of the day is a tricky and competitive handicap for 3 year olds and upwards.
ZAAHID has been switched to this race and must go close. CARNIVORE is worth a consideration too as a good each way chance following promising 3rd Doncaster run.
Main bet: ZAAHID 5/1 each way.
Next best: CARNIVORE 20/1 each way.
Good Luck!
