2.35 Jersey Stakes (Class 1) (Group 3). 7 f

The Jersey Stakes replaced the second leg of the Triennial Stakes in 1919. Named after the 4th Earl of Jersey, who was the Master of the Buckhounds between 1782 and 1783, this contest is designed for 3 year olds who have yet to win a Group 1 or Group 2 race and often provides a stepping-stone to success at the highest level.

CALMING INFLUENCE won both of his latest races but is up 4lb in the weights but it could be STIMULATION which gives him most to worry about. These two have been head to head before at Newmarket when STIMULATION was beaten by a head. Despite the extra 4lb I would say that CALMING INFLUENCE strips fitter.

Main bet: CALMING INFLUENCE 9/2 e/w.
Next best: STIMULATION 7/1 e/w.

3.10 Windsor Forest Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (fillies & Mares) 1m straight.

The Windsor Forest Stakes is a new race to the Royal Meeting this year and part of an industry wide initiative to encourage connections of the leading Classic generation fillies from the previous year to keep their stars in training. The race is open only to fillies and mares aged 4 or over. Group 1 winners carry a penalty, so the option of the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, where no penalties are carried, is still very much open to the very best fillies.

HEAVEN SENT is part of a strong list of contenders fielded by Sir Michael Stoute of which this horse he ranks among his best. It’s the form horse on recent performance. I would like to look at something else to pit against HEAVEN SENT but feel this really should be put forward as the only form chance in the race.

Main bet: HEAVEN SENT 5/2.

3.50 Prince of Wales Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1). 1m 2f

First run at Royal Ascot in 1862, this race is named after the son of Queen Victoria – later King Edward VII. Originally staged over 1m5f, the race often attracted horses that had participated in the Classics. There was no Prince of Wales’s Stakes from 1946 until 1968, a year before the current Prince of Wales’s investiture in 1969. In 2000 the race was upgraded to Group 1 status and restricted to 4 year olds and upwards.

Among 4 Aidan O’Brien-trained horses, DUKE OF MARMARLADE (said to be the best 1m2fl horse in Europe) bids for a Group 1 hat-trick. Together with BANKABLE in the next race, it could prove a very expensive double bet for the bookies. Henry Cecil’s PHOENIX TOWER is an improving horse which could upset the Duke. But if you are looking for a horse which if it sprang back to life following lazy runs (an it is an IF!) then LITERATO could surprise whereas SIXTIES ICON would indeed be a very big surprise.

Main bet: DUKE OF MARMALADE 6/4.
Next best: PHOENIX TOWER 9/2 e/w.

4.25 Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 1m straight.

This race, first run in 1843, provides one of the greatest spectacles of the Royal Meeting and carries a maximum field of runners. It is also one of the biggest betting races of the season.

Although BANKABLE may well win it is wise to keep in mind that he has had only 5 races to his portfolio.
BANKABLE trained by Luca Cumani, who is a stone well in and ridden by Frankie Dettori, is the biggest hotpot in the long history of the Royal Hunt Cup after James Fanshawe issued a statement last Tuesday that Artimo had suffered a setback. The shortest-priced winning favourite in the history of this race was Victor in 1863. However, it is worth noting that Luca Cumani has a terrible record at Royal Ascot so BANKABLE may not be so bankable after all? We shall see. I would also look at LANG SHINING or WE’LL COME @ e/w to run close.

Main bet: BANKABLE 7/4.
Next best: WE’LL COME 7/1 e/w.

4.55 Queen Mary Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (Fillies) 5f

Named after the consort of King George V, this race was first run in 1921 and is exclusively for 2 year old fillies over a minimum distance of 5 furlongs. The race assesses the fillies’ ability and potential to perform at Group level.

Jeremy Noseda’s record in both the Queen Mary and Albany Stakes since 2000 reads 22126143. Consequently he looks to have a strong hand in both these races with his two year old fillies and team of juveniles. That aside, HEART SHAPED (Aiden O’Brein) is said to “have the winner”. If he hasn’t got the winner then it could be DANEHILL DESTINY who showed she could really accelerate when running at Newmarket recently.

Main bet: HEART SHAPED 9/2 each way.
Next best: DANEHILL DESTINY 7/2.

5.30 Sandringham Rated Stakes (Class 1) (Handicap) (Listed Race) (Fillies) 1m straight

Originally registered as the Fern Hill Stakes, this race was part of the traditional Heath Day card on the Saturday after Royal Ascot. The race is limited to 3 year old fillies only over the straight mile. It was enhanced in value and renamed, after the Royal residence, as part of the 2000 Golden Jubilee celebrations when the meeting was first extended to 5 days.

MAKAASEB has an obvious chance (blocked at York or otherwise may have won as has turn of foot) with pretension to lift itself out of handicap into Pattern class with conditions and track to suit. MARAMBA is a potential fast improving Group horse and worth a good look.

Main bet: MAKAASEB 11/4.
Next best: MARAMBA 11/2 each way.

Good Luck!
