Royal Ascot Tipster

NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW THAT!

This is my last epistle about racing until the big day itself: Royal Ascot 2008 when I shall be downloading daily tips for each race.

However, until then I thought I’d write some fun stuff about what happens at Royal Ascot. So here goes:

With Champagne costing between £ 38 and £145 a bottle you may be astonished to hear that no less than £2million is spent guzzling the stuff. Last year this added up to a healthy stack of 170,000 bottles opened and tossed back!

Don’t think the traditional English Tea has gone out of fashion either. Oh no, indeed not. Sultana Scones with Raspberry and Blackcurrant Preserve, the ubiquitous Battenberg cake and cucumber and Mint and Egg and cress sandwiches are all the go. Think on this. Last year 1,000 kilogram’s of clotted cream were heaped on 100,000 scones accompanied by 75,000 rounds of afternoon tea sandwiches and polished off with 18,000 punnets of strawberries! We mustn’t forget the Pimms which accounts for 14,000 bottles.

Then there’s the seafood, so think on this. 10,000 lobsters, 18,000 salmon steaks, 8,000 crabs, 5,000 oysters, 1,000 scallops. But what about the smoked salmon I hear you cry! Well, an unbelievable four tons of that is wolfed down! To say nothing of 18,000 portions of foie gras, for those who fancy that particular alternative starter. If you don’t like seafood then you can be one of thousands who consume four tons of beef fillet washed down with over 160,000 pints of beer.

So think of all the washing up. That adds up to 285,000 pieces of crockery, cutlery and glassware for use each day!

Enough! I hear you cry. Let’s get down to some serious racing.
