John Cassidy CLASS WILL OUT You really can’t expect a rash of winners at Wolverhampton necessarily to reproduce that form at Ascot. Ascot is graded an A Class course whereas Wolverhampton is a D Class course. In exactly the same way, horses are graded too. If you attend Royal Ascot you will be fortunate to witness some of the best races and some of the most superb horses in the world running today. For example, St James's Palace Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1) (Entire Colts) 1 Mile Round 3 year olds, Queen Anne Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1) 1 Mile Straight. 4+ year olds, Windsor Castle Stakes (Class 1) (Listed Race) 5f. 2 year olds - and that feast will be on the very first day! It’s complicated in some ways but all you have to remember is that the higher the Class the better quality are the horses competing for the prize. Class 1 horses are totally superior to the run of the mill horses found in lower classifications. Obvious you may shriek. But it is? I have quoted two Class 1 Group 1’s and one Class 1 Listed Race. You could equally have a Class 1 Group 2 or a Class 1 Group 3 and where did Listed come from? Now you see it’s not quite as easy as it at first appeared is it? Although Group 1 horses are superb there are horses which will never make Group 1. For them, they will best perform in Group 2 or Group 3 races. Listed, is the level of higher quality below those classified as Group races. And so it goes on, but we’ll leave it at that. All it adds up to the fact that not only is Royal Ascot an A Class track; not only will you be witnessing the very best of racing the world has to offer over 5 days of sumptuous competition, but you will also be mingling with the high and mighty, the fabulously famous, and the hoi polloi, but what is so fantastic about Royal Ascot is that when it comes to racing everyone’s equal - even though outwardly it may not necessarily appear so.
