Ladies Day Racing Tips

Ladies Day Royal Ascot horse racing tipster Brian Smith is back with us for this year's race card. THURSDAY 20th June 2007.

ROYAL ASCOT FORECASTED WINNERS FOR THURSDAY

2.30 Norfolk Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2). 2 year olds. 5f

16 go to post. The market will go for WINKLER WATSON 5/2 to win this following Newbury success and is thought highly of by trainer Chapple-Hyam but SPIRIT OF SHARJAH 7/1 with 2 wins under his girth is a top performer and could well clinch this. At least 7/1 is value each way.

Main bet: SPIRIT OF SHARJAH 7/1 each way. Next best: Winkler Watson 5/2.

3.05 Ribblesdale Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (Fillies) 3 year olds. 1m 4f

12 go to post. Trainer Aiden O’Brein could strike here with ALL MY LOVING 11/8 but SILKWOOD 11/2 won’t be far behind. SILKWOOD had to work hard to win at Sandown recently, whereas ALL MY LOVING is lightly raced and likely to be in the frame if not past the post.

Main bet: ALL MY LOVING 11/8. Next best: Silkwood 11/2 each way.

3.45 Gold Cup (Class 1) (Group 1). 2m 4f

14 go to post in what is probably going to be one of the hardest fought for Gold Cups ever seen. This selection is very difficult as indeed it should be for the Gold Cup. SERGEANT CECIL 9/2 has been a very good contributor to my bank account but is up against 8/13 odds on YEATS much fancied to take this. YEATS, however, offers no value in the market so look elsewhere. MONTARE shouts value at 16/1 following Gp 1 Prix Royal-Oak at Longchamp’s extended mile win but is 2m 4fl too long today? GEORDIELAND is no slouch either and rode 2nd to SERGEANT CECIL in the Yorkshire Cup. So MONTARE with Peslier aboard for a value place.

Main bet: MONTARE 16/1 each way. Next best: Sergeant Cecil 9/2.

4.20 Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 3 year olds. 1m 4f

30 thunder to post and although ARTIMINO 11/2 looks good to win this, I would not rule out 12/1 SMOOKH which is lightly weighted although yet to test stamina. COLARADO RAPID 7/1 could be there or thereabouts being lightly raced. Going for value then ……….

Main bet: COLARADO RAPID 7/1 each way. Next best Smookh 12/1 each way.

4.55 Hampton Court Stakes (Class 1) (Listed Race) 3 year olds. 1m 2f

KID MAMBO 6/1 looks good in this 16 runner field as will put hooves on the gas but trip may be suited as dropping back in distance and DESERT DEW 6/1 will not disgrace as will be suited for the opposite reason – a sep up in distance!

Main bet: DESERT DEW 6/1 each way. Next best Kid Mambo 6/1 each way.

5.30 King George V Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 1mile 4f

Despite a 19 runner filed and much from which to select, and despie a raise of 11lb in the weights following Your win, at 8/1 FILIOS looks attractive. ERADICATED 6/1 could be snapping at his hooves following an impressive Haydock run recently.

Main bet: FILIOS 8/1 each way. Next best Eradicated 6/1 each way.

GOOD LUCK!

HISTORY AND EXPLANATION OF THE RACES

2.30 Norfolk Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2). 2 year olds. 5f

First run in 1843, this race was formerly known as the New Stakes and staged over a distance of just under 4 furlongs. Named after the Duke of Norfolk, Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot between 1945 and 1972, it became the Norfolk Stakes in 1973. It is one of the first Group races of the season for juveniles.

3.05 Ribblesdale Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (Fillies) 3 year olds. 1m 4f

Named after the 4th Baron Ribblesdale, Master of the Buckhounds between 1892 and 1895. First run in 1919, this race was originally staged over a mile for 3 and 4 year olds. Now restricted to the Classic generation only and run over the extended distance of a mile and a half, the winner of the Ribblesdale Stakes is invariably a top class filly.

3.45 Gold Cup (Class 1) (Group 1). 2m 4f

Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup is the oldest and one of the most prestigious races at Royal Ascot. Staged over the marathon trip of two and a half miles, the race is a stiff test of stamina and attracts the very best staying horses.

4.20 Britannia Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 3 year olds. 1m 4f

First run in 1928 over the straight mile of the Royal Hunt Cup course, this race still retains similar conditions today. Open to 3 year old colts and geldings only, the Britannia Handicap is always guaranteed to provide a thrilling finish.

4.55 Hampton Court Stakes (Class 1) (Listed Race) 3 year olds. 1m 2f

Originally registered as the New Stakes, this race was part of the traditional Heath Day card on the Saturday after Royal Ascot. It was enhanced in value and re-named The Hampton Court Stakes, after the Tudor Royal Residence, as part of the Golden jubilee celebrations in 2002, when the meeting was first extended to 5 days. This is a listed event, run over 10 furlongs and restricted to 3 year olds only.

5.30 King George V Stakes (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 1mile 4f

Like the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes on the opening day of the meeting, this is another handicap for middle-distance performers, staged over one and a half miles. The inaugural running was in July 1946 as part of the first fixture staged at the racecourse outside of the Royal Meeting, before the race was transferred to Royal Ascot in 1948.
