Racing Tips Royal Ascot
Royal Ascot horse racing tipster Brian Smith is back with us for this year's race card. WEDNESDAY 20th June 2007.
ROYAL ASCOT FORECASTED WINNERS FOR WEDNESDAY
2.30 Jersey Stakes (Class 1) (Group 3). 7 f
STRATEGIC PRINCE 12/1 has struggled recently to find form since his third in the Dewhurst. US RANGER 2/1 was ground down in the 2000 Gns recently but showed mettle as a 4 times winner in France previous to that and must be respected. The 2000 Gns also did for MAJOR CADEAUX 9/2 but conditions suit today. Form has to point to US RANGER. 17 go to post.
Main bet: US RANGER 2/1. Next best: Major Cadeaux 9/2 each way.
3.05 Windsor Forest Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (fillies & Mares) 1m straight.
10 go to post. This should be a battle between WASSEEMA 10/1 and NANNIA 11/4. Michael Stout trained WASSEEMA could be up for improvement but NANNIA could close impressively in the final run. Trainer John Gosden feels she can clinch this.
Main bet: NANNIA 11/4. Next best: Wasseema 10/1 each way.
3.45 Prince of Wales Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1). 1m 2f
6 go to post. MANDURO’s 11/4 near misses last year (or near hits!) has been reversed this year to 2 straight wins and is set to show turn of foot here today too. This year’s wins at the Earl of Sefton and Prix d’Ispahan was impressive. Difficult to consider others but DYLAN THOMAS 11/4 may present MANDURO with most to do.
Main bet: MANDURO 11/4. Next best: Dylan Thomas 11/4.
4.20 Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 1m straight.
30 thunder away in this race. ROYAL OATH 8/1 is scheduled to improve when 2nd at recent Newbury trial race and has been given blinkers to assist today. Have a silly each way bet on SKHILLING SPIRIT at 20/1 on the basis that last night’s downpour could prove manner from heaven. Did come 2nd in the Victoria Cup after all!
Main bet: ROYAL OATH 8/1. Small money fun each way Skhilling Spirit 20/1.
4.55 Queen Mary Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (Fillies) 5f
21 go to post. TIA MIA 12/1 could progress to win this if not fading after zipping out of the stalls as wont to do. REGAL STEP 13/2 is highly though of by trainer RMH Cowell and goes to post with his confidence at least. Eddie Ahern pilots. Good chance.
Main bet: REGAL STEP 13/2 each way. Next best: TIA MIA 12/1 each way.
5.30 Sandringham Rated Stakes (Class 1) (Handicap) (Listed Race) (Fillies) 1m straight
Another 21 horse field in which little stands out to poinoint. Trainer Ed Dunlop has won this twice and sends lightly raced CHANTILLY TIFFANY 12/1 to post, so there is one pointer there. ITALIAN GIRL 8/1 is said to be highly regarded for this rance by trainer AP Jarvis and is thought capable of huge improvement.
Main bet: ITALIAN GIRL 8/1 each way. Next best: Chantilly Tiffany 12/1 each way.
GOOD LUCK

HISTORY AND EXPLANATION OF THE RACES
2.30 Jersey Stakes (Class 1) (Group 3). 7 f
The Jersey Stakes replaced the second leg of the Triennial Stakes in 1919. Named after the 4th Earl of Jersey, who was the Master of the Buckhounds between 1782 and 1783, this contest is designed for 3 year olds who have yet to win a Group 1 or Group 2 race and often provides a stepping-stone to success at the highest level.
3.05 Windsor Forest Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (fillies & Mares) 1m straight.
The Windsor Forest Stakes is a new race to the Royal Meeting this year and part of an industry wide initiative to encourage connections of the leading Classic generation fillies from the previous year to keep their stars in training. The race is open only to fillies and mares aged 4 or over. Group 1 winners carry a penalty, so the option of the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, where no penalties are carried, is still very much open to the very best fillies.
3.45 Prince of Wales Stakes (Class 1) (Group 1). 1m 2f
First run at Royal Ascot in 1862, this race is named after the son of Queen Victoria – later King Edward VII. Originally staged over 1m5f, the race often attracted horses that had participated in the Classics. There was no Prince of Wales’s Stakes from 1946 until 1968, a year before the current Prince of Wales’s investiture in 1969. In 2000 the race was upgraded to Group 1 status and restricted to 4 year olds and upwards.
4.20 Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap) (Class 2) 1m straight.
This race, first run in 1843, provides one of the greatest spectacles of the Royal Meeting and carries a maximum field of runners. It is also one of the biggest betting races of the season.
4.55 Queen Mary Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2) (Fillies) 5f
Named after the consort of King George V, this race was first run in 1921 and is exclusively for 2 year old fillies over a minimum distance of 5 furlongs. The race assesses the fillies’ ability and potential to perform at Group level.
5.30 Sandringham Rated Stakes (Class 1) (Handicap) (Listed Race) (Fillies) 1m straight
Originally registered as the Fern Hill Stakes, this race was part of the traditional Heath Day card on the Saturday after Royal Ascot. The race is limited to 3 year old fillies only over the straight mile. It was enhanced in value and renamed, after the Royal residence, as part of the 2000 Golden Jubilee celebrations when the meeting was first extended to 5 days.
