Gold Cup Tips

3.50 Gold Cup (Class 1) (Group 1). 2m 4f

Founded in 1807, the Gold Cup is the oldest and one of the most prestigious races at Royal Ascot. Staged over the marathon trip of two and a half miles, the race is a stiff test of stamina and attracts the very best staying horses.

Despite winning at Leopardstown, the 5 yr old Fame And Glory’s 15/8 half length victory was workmanlike rather than exceptional. Connections are confident he will stay the 2 mile 4 furlong trip, which is one of the most testing in flat racing, as he steps up to that distance for the first time - but the way he struggled over 1 mile 6 furlongs at Leopardstown will be a concern. Despite that, Fame And Glory is a former Irish Derby winner and will be the one to beat and Aidan O'Brien is a four time winner of the Gold Cup (2006-2009) and that is a record that demands respect. Duncan 11/2 is class at his best which he showed to good effect by winning the Yorkshire Cup and has shown ability to find reserves when needed. Holberg 9/1 should be considered as he is a reliable stayer. I saw him run very well indeed in the Melbourne Cup but too much rain will be a problem for him. A tempting each-way bet could come in the form of 20/1 punt Askar Tau, who despite finishing sixth in the Yorkshire Cup is a proven stayer having won the Group 2 Lonsdale and Doncaster Cups, as well as the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes over 2 miles at Ascot in April. Again in the Gold Cup line up is Kasbah Bliss 14/1, having finished a distant 6th behind Rite of Passage last year. Nick Smith, Royal Ascot’s Head of International Racing tipped last year’s Cesarewitch winner Aaim to Prosper @ 66/1 this morning.

Main bet: Duncan 11/2 each way No: 4 on the racecard.

Side bet: Aaim to Prosper 66/1 No: 1 on the racecard.
