Norfolk Stakes Tips

2.35 Norfolk Stakes (Class 1) (Group 2). 2 year olds. 5f

First run in 1843, this race was formerly known as the New Stakes and staged over a distance of just under 4 furlongs. Named after the Duke of Norfolk, Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot between 1945 and 1972, it became the Norfolk Stakes in 1973. It is one of the first Group races of the season for juveniles.

21 runners thunder to the post in this opener. The Kevin Ryan trained Bapak Chinta 7/2 whose impressive victory at Hamilton is very highly regarded. The horse beat Frederick Engels, winner of the first day’s Windsor Castle Stakes so should put in a sound performance here today. I also like the look of Pyman’s Theory 15/2 whose creditable display in Listed National Stakes could place this horse there or thereabouts. Then there’s Ed Dunlop who runs Burwaaz 14/1 who has scored with 3 of his 10 runners in 2 year old non-handicaps at this course. However, most of today’s bets (759) to date are on Silverheels 7/1 who “looked a bit special” in a Windsor maiden in April.

Main bet: Bapak Chinta 7/2 to win (provided rain doesn’t alter the going too much) No: 3 on the racecard.

Side bet Pyman’s Theory 15/2 each way No: 21 on the racecard.
