MRI Scan

MRI Scan

MRI stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, which is a technique that provides doctors with a crystal clear picture of the human body without using x-rays – MRI offers speedy, early diagnosis.

Recently a member of the Bracknell RNA developed another lower back problem, a possible prolapsed disc, extremely difficult to ascertain with an x-ray. Because it was a re occurring problem Private Medical Cover will not cover the cost of any treatment.

Our shipmate was seen by his GP who started the long drawn out process of many cocktails of painkilling drugs, appointments for the x-rays, appointments for the orthopaedics with the possibility of being placed on the list for an MRI scan. Then the proper prescribed treatment a process of anything between 1 – 10 months depending on your age, location, lottery number etc, etc.

The shipmate then made enquires for the cost of the MRI Scan, now here is the process without private health cover.

- Pay for the first consultation, costs varied from
£100 - £190 for the first consultation.
- Pay for your own MRI scan of one part of the body;
o Windsor £680:00
o Slough £520:00
o Cheltenham £198:00
- Pay for second consultation £100 - £190 to obtain the
prognosis then be referred back to your GP with the full
prognosis and recommended treatment.
NB: It looks as if the cost for electricity in Berkshire is a little more expensive.
The shipmate was seen on a Friday by the consultant, and in the MRI scanner in Cheltenham the following Tuesday, less than three working days. This will now bring the process down to 1 – 3 months, maybe quicker if the correct drugs and treatment are prescribed.

We are not even going to promote the Windsor & Slough MRI Scan (or should I say scam) , but the Cobalt Unit Appeal Fund that operates their MRI Scanning process in Cheltenham.

Details off the MRI Unit at Linton House Clinic, Cheltenham are worth looking at; considering that most veterans cannot get adequate cover for private health care let alone afford it.

The Bracknell RNA will promote this organisation wherever possible, but also would like to ask the question how can the same process be almost three times the cost.

The Cobalt Appeal is always looking for events to raise money and the Bracknell RNA will be donating in 2006 to assist, if you or your company wish to assist then read the details of how on their webpage.

Leaving money in your will can also help How Inheritance Tax Relief Works - if you don't the tax man then what happens to it...??

So spare a thought when your GP requests an x-ray of whether an MRI scan would prove more beneficial to catching a disease or tumour early to allow correct preventative treatment and a prolonged life.

And finally, ask your local MP why the costs are so much, especially when 5 mobile scanning units were identified during December 2005 parked neatly out of sight on a trading estate in Camberley.
