Oxfordshire Golf Club Charity Day

The winners, from L to R: Harvey Burniston, David Smith, Michael Parkinson, Trevor Smith and Mike Bennett.

June 21st 2007. Hosted by Michael Parkinson and organised by Malcolm Macken

The Golf day went very well as the weather kept dry and the championship golf course was in superb condition, which was appreciated by all 88 players playing in fairly windy conditions, and on lightening quick greens for which The Oxfordshire golf course is renowned. The winning team of Trevor Smith, Harvey Burniston, David Smith and Mike Bennett scored 88 points, only 7 sevens teams out of 22 teams managed to score more than 80 points, which gives an idea of how tough the course was playing in the wind and on very quick greens. Another highlight of the day was when one of our members, Bryan Cummings scored a hole in one on the 13th hole across the lake, which proved costly for him as the tradition is to buy everyone a drink in the Club House.

The evening was rounded off with some side splitting entertainment by Bobby Davro who was in superb form; he had tears running down most peoples faces with his unique brand of humour. A well supported charity auction followed, with some unusual lots such as a diamond necklace in 18 carat gold with 160 brilliant cut diamonds weighing 3.08 carats; a Villa for eight people in Quinta do Lago, Portugal; an executive box and hospitality for six at Manchester United; VIP Hospitality at Henley Regatta; VIP tickets to Michael Parkinson's show all raising very good sums. The finale was dancing to music by Angus Murray's Jazz Band.

Michael Parkinson gave a touching speech about Alexander, and how the funds raised for the Trust setup in Alexander's memory by John and Fiona Devine would be used. Everyone at the event was moved by Michael's words, and appreciated what a worthy and ambitious cause it is.

Our sincere thanks and gratitude to Malcolm Macken and all his supporters and Michael Parkinson.
