Gas registration scheme changes hands in April 2009

Gas registration scheme changes hands from CORGI to Capita
In April 2009, Capita Group will take over from CORGI as the company managing the Britain's gas installer registration scheme. They will run the scheme, which aims to improve gas safety across Britain, for 10 years. Domestic gas is widely used in Britain: about 21 million homes are gas-fuelled. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations (GSIUR) 1998, along with improvements in the inherent safety of gas appliances, succeeds in keeping consumers safe and providing a framework for improving gas safety. However, the HSE's 2006 review of the domestic gas safety regime identified the need for some changes: they pinpointed public awareness of gas and CO risks as a key area. The review also recommended a reformed gas installer registration scheme to add value to both consumer gas safety and to gas installers. The new scheme will implement recommendations from the HSE's review, and the HSE will oversee the system. Capita, who also manage the BBC's TV licensing, aim to promote gas safety awareness in their new role whilst delivering extra benefits to gas consumers and installers. Corgi will work with the HSE and Capita during the transition process. CORGI CEO Mike Thompson said: "CORGI will now work closely with the HSE and Capita to ensure a smooth transition process between scheme providers in the interests of gas safety. Our focus now is to work with the HSE and Capita to maintain the profile of gas safety for installers and consumers." The Capita registration scheme plays a crucial role in the work that AHSS undertakes in construction safety, where contractor vetting and establishing competency is vital when dealing with construction projects throughout the UK.
