Avoid accidents in the home at Christmas time
Tis the season to be careful... accidents in the home are more likely to happen when there's a gathering of people all eating, drinking and making merry. Add to the mix a hot oven, crowded kitchen and floor cluttered with gifts and you can see why A&E departments are full at this time of year.
Did you know? - Since 1996, 31 Brits have died by watering their Christmas tree while the Christmas lights were plugged in. - In the last three years, 19 Brits have died from eating Christmas decorations they thought were chocolates. - Last year, four broken arms were reported as a result of over-zealous cracker-pulling activities. - In the last two years, 543 Brits were admitted to hospital after trying to open bottles of beer with their teeth. - Three Brits die each year testing a 9v battery on their tongue. - In 1999, 142 Brits were injured by not removing all the pins from new shirts - 58 Brits are injured each year using sharp knives instead of screwdrivers. - Since 1999, 101 people have had broken bits of plastic toy stuck in the soles of their feet. - In 2000, 18 Brits sustained burns from trying on a new jumper with a lit cigarette in their mouth. - In 2007, five Brits were injured in accidents involving Scalextric cars. - In 2000, eight Brits cracked their skull whilst vomiting into the toilet bowl. Don't be one of the casualties. A few simple rules will prevent some of the most common domestic accidents: Turkey takes longer to cook than you might think. Weigh it and plan accordingly, checking that the juices run clear before you serve up. Alcohol is, unsurprisingly, the biggest single cause of accidents and illness over the festive period. The darker the drink, the more likely the hangover (generally speaking). Keep hydrated by drinking water, juice and herbal tea as well, and try going for a walk to get some fresh air. Fire is festive but can also be dangerous. 8% more domestic fires occur on Christmas Day than any other day. Kitchens are a prime source of accidents. Keep crowds out, mop up spills and keep things as tidy as possible: the more implements lying around, the more likelihood of an accident. Everyone at Absolute Health and Safety Solutions wishes you a very merry - and safe - Christmas and New Year!
