Can you handle it?
First, think what are you trying to move?
* Is it too heavy? If so is it possible to move the load using more
people or can the item be divided into smaller and lighter loads.
* Is it an awkward shape, bulky or have sharp edges? If so
would using a trolley be a better option? Gloves will protect
hands.
Second, what are you doing whilst moving the load?
* Are you carrying it over a long distance? If so consider using a
trolley or taking a break.
* Will you have to bend, twist or reach up with it? Do not bend
from the waist with straight legs but lift with a straight back,
with your head up and use your thighs and upper legs as the
power for the lift. To turn the load change direction with your
feet, do not twist your body. Ideally keep heavy and large items
on lower shelves.
Third, where will you be lifting and carrying the load?
* Have you assessed the route along which
the load is being carried? Are the doors open, are there any trip hazards, is the floor slippery, is the
route wide enough for the load? Are there any stairs……and are they well lit?
The basic rules are:
* Plan and assess before lifting.
* Don’t struggle and suffer in silence, get help.
* Whenever possible avoid lifting at all, use handling aids.
