Practical & Sensible Approach
The HSE are moving towards trying to convince people that a sensible risk management approach should be adopted. Absolute Health and Safety Solutions Ltd believe in the Practical Approach, it’s our motto. We are finding time and time again that managers and business owners are missing the issue when it comes to risk management. To quote Bill Callaghan, Chair of the Health and Safety Commission

"I am sick and tired of hearing about petty health and safety stopping people doing worthwhile and enjoyable things, when at the same time others are suffering harm and even death due to poor management and complacency".

Our businessat Absolute Health and Safety Solutions Ltd is Health and Safety, that’s what we do - to us, it is a natural thing, like
a) the carpenter who is a natural at woodwork
b) the welder whose work flows with inspiration
c) the builder that makes the structures to last a life time
d) the architect that designs the prize building
e) the interior designer that creates the wow factor
Everyone is a natural and expert in their own field and some times we rely on each others skill for us to achieve an ultimate goal - but with all of them there will always be an element of Health and Safety involvement, whether practical or complex.

The Practical and Sensible approach to risk management starts with not re inventing the wheel, the HSE has undertaken a lot of research and provides a wealth of FREE information on line that can help you start, a risk assessment only has to be formally recorded if it is significant – oh god that word Risk Assessment!, I just felt 200 people switch of their PC’s. Bear this in mind for you to get from your home to work and switch on your PC you undertook multiple risk assessments and you probably never formally recorded one of them.

Driving a car on the road these days makes risk assessors of us all; think about it! The Highway Code is a documented list of control measures as a result of someone completing a formal risk assessment for driving a car on the road. When you take lessons and pass your test then this information is passed to you. When you commence driving on the road you are constantly reviewing these control measures which ensure that you reach your destination safely. Some times you ignore them and they result in breakdowns, accidents, fines or rehabilitation training to put you back on track.

As with the HSE free leaflet webpage there is information, codes of practice and formal written control measures available for you to use in your business. Yes; it is a legal requirement that you control the risks in your business, but you can do by simply applying a Practical & Sensible Approach. To start with visit the myth web pages – this is where the HSE is disband some far fetched beliefs people have with respect to Health and Safety

To close with a further statement from Bill Callaghan, Chair of the Health and Safety Commission to sum up the attitudes of some people and organisations:

"We must, and will, promote the sensible management of risks that protects people from real harm and suffering, but avoids bureaucratic back covering. My clear message is that if you are using health and safety to stop everyday activities – get a life and let others get on with theirs. But equally, if you think health and safety is a joke and that you can just ignore real risks, and then try telling that to the families of the 212 workers who never went home at all last year. Sensible risk management is emphatically about saving lives, not stopping them".
