Small businesses are now able to get confidential safety advice over the 'phone with the launch of Workplace Health Connect.

The service is designed to give free, practical advice on workplace health, safety and return to work issues to firms in England and Wales that employ between five and 250 workers.

This group accounts for a significant proportion of the 97 per cent of employers who don't currently provide comprehensive workplace health support, according to the Health and Safety Executive.

The HSE says that businesses pay out an average of £1,200 every time a worker takes time off for illness or injury. Work-related ill health and injury costs the UK economy as a whole around £10 billion a year.

'It is simply unacceptable that the UK's small businesses incur major costs because they are unaware of effective and efficient solutions to manage health and safety,' said safety minister Lord Hunt. 'A confidential advisory service for small businesses offers cost-effective and simple solutions to help cut workplace injuries and ill health.'

Workplace Health Connect aims to lower the rate of work-related ill health in England and Wales by six per cent and cut the number of days lost through injuries and ill health by nine per cent.

Jointly run by the Department for Work and Pensions and the HSE, the initiative also includes a pilot project providing small firms with free problem-solving visits to their premises.

A similar service to Workplace Health Connect has been running in Scotland since 2003.
