A Practical Approach to Health and Safety
Are you out of your Depth?
Since the introduction of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA), employers, the self-employed, suppliers, manufacturers and the employees themselves have been required to act upon the legislation that makes the workplace safe for employees, and those affected by their work duties.
The law states that if you have 5 or more employees you must have a written health and safety policy; this must include all the arrangements for implementing the policy and its related health and safety practices.
HASAWA states that… "It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far is as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of all employees and anyone who may be affected by their undertakings in the workplace"
In particular this extends to the provision of;
Safe plant and systems of work,
Safe use, storage, handling and transport of articles and substances,
Provision of information, instruction and training,
Safe means of access and egress, with a safe place of work,
Safe working environment,
Appointment of Safety Representatives
The most common and recognised form for identifying a company's health and safety needs is through Risk Assessment (Regulation 3, Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999). This will not only identify hazards and risk but can also highlight the need for policy building, training evaluation, and specific types of further risk assessment that may be related to a company's operations, e.g. Fire Safety, Accidents and First Aid, Display Screen Equipment (DSE), Manual Handling, Work Equipment, Stress, Pregnant Workers, Waste Management.
