Good morning <07 Name>

Well my favourite month of the year is nearly over for another year. The weather has not been great but it has made the sunny days even more special. Most businesses I have spoken to over the month have not suffered the usual August down turn in sales, someone I spoke t had even done 5 times their sales target! I guess businesses that would usually slow down and take a few days off due to hot weather have carried on, business as usual. I have definitely had one of my busiest months ever at Fish in Custard, but I think that is because I have been given this fabulous opportunity of editing the BinB newsletter.

I really enjoyed the environmental theme over the last four weeks. You can catch up on any of the articles you may have missed in the Environment section on BinB. If you would like to comment on any of the articles from coping with the floods to offsetting your carbon footprint to please email me, I would love to hear your thoughts. The best will be published in the newsletter.

With the end of the school holidays near and exam results all collected, the children and teachers are savouring their last few days of freedom and the parents are starting to rejoice at the thought of the normal routine returning. It seems like an appropriate time to be considering Education.

I would like to invite you to comment on the topic for the month with any views, interesting stories or experiences, please do email me, we look for up to 250 words, the best will be made up into one of our stunning graphic downloads and published on the site and in the newsletter, of course linking back to your website and contact details.

Today we consider the value of A-level grades, how universities now have to teach essay skills and what should go in your kids lunch box, enjoy!

I hope you have a great week!

Back to School? What's for Lunch?...

They want to eat chocolate spread sandwiches, crisps, and sweets washed down with loads of fizzy drink. You want them to eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg washed down with natural spring water or possibly some super-healthy yogurt-based drinkÉ How do you compromise?

It's hard enough battling with the little ones when it comes to homework, bathtime, and bedtime. So it's no wonder so many parents throw their hands up in despair when it comes to mealtime hassles, eventually giving in to repeated screams for crisps and chocolate rather than persevering with the healthier stuff we know we should be encouraging our offspring to enjoy. But if they won't even try it, what can you do? Here's a few lunchbox tips - perfectly timed for 'back to school' season...

Students Criticised for Poor Writing Skills

It seems many universities are finding it necessary to offer compulsory classes in essay writing for new students. Why? Because despite record numbers of successful A level achievers, many are arriving at university unable to construct a proper essay.

There is growing doubt that the current A level system is successfully preparing young adults for either further education OR the world of work. Governor of the University of Hertfordshire (and former chief inspector of schools), Sir Mike Tomlinson, believes the current A level system is simply not 'doing the job it set out to do', adding that extra classes were often needed in order to bring students up to an acceptable level - not just in English but in other academic subjects too.

New Grades Set to Raise A Level Standards

Every year at result time it seems the same debate raises it head: are exams getting easier? Is it easier to score an A grade now than it was say 10 or 15 years ago? Whatever your view, there's no arguing with the statistics: more than a quarter of this year's A level students were awarded an A - the 25th year in succession that the pass rate has risen.

But if education ministers have their way, a new scale of grading could raise the bar for the nation's top performers once the introduction of A* and A** grades are formalized.

The Green Way to Impress the Neighbours

Not so long ago it was relatively straightforward to keep up with the Joneses next door: all you needed to do was stay one step ahead with the latest electronic gadgetry, go slightly farther afield for your annual holiday, and then make sure your car was one registration letter fresher than theirs. Job done. But nowadays, it's gotten all complicated...

And it can only be a good thing. It seems obvious signs of conspicuous consumption have finally given way to a competition to see who can be the greenest. Where once dinner parties were peppered with talk about exotic foreign holidays and the latest in high-tech gadgetry, today's way to get one up on the neighbours is to brag about your contribution towards saving the planet.

RKRM and Quadnet - Case Study

Tufael Ahmed, Marketing Director of Quadnet:

We didn't have the time or the expertise to drive people to seminars, meetings, our account management team or to build a pipeline of opportunities. As a result, we were looking for a telemarketing agency that would understand our company and our market sector, quickly. Our portfolio is complex and the market even more so.

RKRM has a very professional approach coupled with a unique process that means it fully understands a campaign before even attempting the telemarketing phase of the project. We talked to RKRM about a virtualisation and SAN project and its base knowledge meant we could hit the ground running - most IT managers aren't up to speed on these technologies! The RKRM team ensured we had a busy seminar and produced a targeted approach across several industry sectors.

Offsetting Your Carbon Footprint
Scientists agree that global warming and climate change are very real issues that can only be addressed if each and every one of us takes responsible steps to reduce their CO2 emissions. But for businesses, complete avoidance of all CO2 emissions is almost impossible - but there is an answer to this dilemma : Carbon Offsetting.

Why You Should Get on that Bike and RIDE
It's cheap transport, it's environmentally friendly, and it's far quicker than walking. It's also one of the best ways to get fit (and stay fit) and makes a viable and fun means of transport for the short local trips that make up most of our journeys. If you don't already own a bike - or worse, if you DO own one but it's gathering dust in the back of the shed - then please read on...

A Zero-Emissions High-Powered Sports Car?
Think 'Sports Car' and you don't necessarily think 'environmentally-friendly'. More likely you envisage a noisy gas-guzzler built for speed clogging up the town centre with its potent exhaust emissions. But classic car firm Morgan have been developing what they claim will be the world's first emission-free sports car.

Iceland - Sustainable Energy in Action
Although one of the least habitable countries in the world, Iceland has achieved remarkable success through tapping into its natural resources. Indeed, almost 75% of Iceland's energy consumption comes from renewable power sources such as geothermic energy and hydroelectricity.

Planning Permission Easier for Green Projects
Businesses planning to install eco-friendly technology such as solar heating panels and wind turbines will find themselves given the 'green' light to proceed if recent proposed changes to planning rules go ahead.

New Support For Homeowners To Get Green Grants
A new system to help homebuyers get green grants worth hundreds of pounds to lower their fuel bills and make their homes greener has been announced following the introduction of Home Information Packs and Energy Performance Certificates.

Eco-Friendly International Travel
Last week saw an encampment of worthy eco-supporters setting up base on the outskirts of Heathrow airport in protest of emissions produced by air travel. Rightly or wrongly, some of the participants were stripped bare by the press when asked about their own travel habits: many of the demonstrators turned out to be fairly regular flyers themselves. So what can you do if you DO enjoy travelling but still wish to minimise long-term damage to the planet?

Virtual Office Support?
Swamped, over-stretched businesses in need of support have the option of taking on an employee to relieve the pressure. However most small businesses shy away from this option and continue to try and complete everything with their available resources. This can lead to mounting stress levels and the increased likelihood of important actions being delayed or even forgotten.

Expenses System
Keeping expenses and mileage records is very important, without accurate data you will never know exactly how much you have spent on your business.

Administration Job
We are looking for experienced PA's, Secretaries, Office Managers, Book Keepers and Administrators to fulfil a variety of regular and ad hoc projects for small businesses.

Bank Charges
The ongoing saga of bank charges has made the headlines yet again and this time it's bad news for the customers. These charges have seen a turbulent history over the last year with some calling for them to be scrapped. Now the Financial Services Authority has issued a statement saying that banks "are no longer obliged to deal with these claims."

Practical & Sensible Approach
The HSE are moving towards trying to convince people that a sensible risk management approach should be adopted. Absolute Health and Safety Solutions Ltd believe in the Practical Approach, it's our motto. We are finding time and time again that managers and business owners are missing the issue when it comes to risk management. To quote Bill Callaghan, Chair of the Health and Safety Commission
