Good morning <07 Name>

It's officially summer, school's out and it's time to relax and enjoy the world around us. For small businesses it's very hard to switch off. There is always something that needs doing and there is only 1 person who is going to do it! Letting go and passing things to others is a difficult task but if you are going to move forward and progress then you need to clear the space to allow you to focus on steering your ship.

From next week, for the month of August, we will have a guest editor for our BinB newsletter. Hannah Lewis of Fish in Custard, knocked on my door last summer and said, "Hi Jon, got any custard you need sorting?" and we've worked on a number of projects together since then:

  1. Hannah helped us organise the GIFT event which combined raising £500 for Children in Need with allowing budding entrepreneurs to showcase themselves as part of Enterprise Week.
  2. This turned into the Innovation Showcase where, during February, we ran a story a day around an innovative idea. This area now has 50 articles around all sorts of ideas and pages which are constantly picked up by Google searches. June 2007 saw 403 people visiting the innovation space on BinB and this keeps growing each month. www.innovationshowcase.co.uk
  3. More recently Hannah has helped us with a couple of projects where we took the BinB CMS, tweaked it with bespoke design and created individual web sites for clients. Websites which have their own look and feel but benefit from their news feeds being added to our member's news page and their content being delivered to you in our newsletters. Take a look: www.workingabroadmagazine.co.uk and www.chemistryconsulting.biz
  4. Hannah has been working with Reading Business Club, helping its members get their voice heard via our newsletter. She attends their regular business breakfasts, spends time with a member and writes up their story. We have been publishing these stories in BinB since January and a search for the title of the first story, The Sales Doctorz, finds Mike's story still in pole position.
  5. The involvement with the University of Reading around Enterprise Week, the work she has been doing with Reading Business Club and our need to get more people scribbling content, led to the creation of our Apprentice Programme. www.apprenticeprogramme.co.uk
  6. Next week Hannah will introduce another Hannah! Hannah Scott is our first student apprentice who has a fab 'n' funky way with words! She will be working with Hannah at her new monthly Business in Berkshire Business Breakfast. This will be modelled on a winning breakfast formula and supported by the inventor of the Keller Breakfast Mary Flavelle.
By getting actively involved with Business in Berkshire Hannah has picked up a number of new accounts for her own business which has meant she is on target to blow her targets!!

To find out more about what Hannah can do for you get along to her BinB Breakfast and tell all those in attendance who you are, what you can do, the type of customers you want and how people can get in touch!

In September we'll have some other new events to tell you about... the "new year" (September) will be all about building business in Berkshire and helping our friends put pound's in their pockets...

Invitation to tender

Tenders? Aren't they rather boring things, to be avoided if at all possible? Ian Smith doesn't think so, in fact he thinks they can be very exciting - when you win one!

Ian's 'Winning Tenders' business helps smaller companies win sizeable chunks of public sector and corporate business - and he has plenty of successful examples to prove that his approach works. He says: 'Public sector and corporate organisations award tens of billions of pounds worth of contracts every year to successful bidders. Many others would like to bid, or improve their success ratio, but often find the process of putting together a formal bid document difficult. SMEs don't normally have a 'tendering team' so the onerous task falls to someone who ought to be doing something else.'

Replying Promptly to Business Email

Businesses that do not respond quickly to email requests run a serious risk of losing business to their competitors according to a recent survey by web hosting company Fasthosts.

How often have you sent an email request to a company only to find yourself resending it again and again before receiving a response? It's a common and frustrating problem which most of us have experienced. Indeed some of us may feel a twinge of guilt as we read this, recognizing that we too sometimes need a prompt or two before taking appropriate action with emails.

Testimonial from Neal Hefti

The Syd Lawrence Orchestra's RE:GENERATION album is a fantastic showcase for a truly great band.

Their recordings of "Splanky" and "Old Man River" mark them out as worthy custodians of the Basie Legacy.

Their faultless section work, great soloists and vocalists and hard swinging rhythm section make every track a gem.

This album is a "must have" for all serious Big Band fans.
