Welcome to Business in Berkshire
Good Morning

Thursday's focus will be on networking. Profiles on networking groups around the area and how to set up your own network! We will be profiling the members of Reading Business Club during 2007, kicking things off with the Salez Doctorz.

Berkshire Community Foundation do a great job of making giving to the right charity easy for companies. Take a look around their website when you have five minutes. Today is the launch of RACT – Reading Area Charities Together. Get your self along for a spot of networking and a light lunch, contact Ruth and tell her BinB sent you.

John Bycroft would also like to see you for a spot of speed networking in Wokingham. He manages the IOD speed networking events so there could be some good connections to be had! For those of you with a little too much in your current account, Chris Clegg can help you find a friend at his Equity Entrepreneur© Workshop. The FSB conference is gearing up and there are a few other network connections to be had below.

We finish off with a couple of articles about the property market... enjoy!

Regards,
Jon Davey

Alternative Education

Connect Reading’s next forum will speak directly to employers and explain why businesses are the ‘right people in the right place’ to make a difference to a young persons life, especially for those young people who have been unable to engage successfully with the formal education system.

Speakers will take a few minutes within their presentation to outline how employer’s support for young people on alternative education programmes will really make a difference to their lives and highlight what these young people can offer business.

Featured Gallery – Richard Human

This month’s featured gallery is of Richard Human’s 2005 project highlighting the plight of grass-roots sports facilities in this country when up against over-blown and over-budget development projects which are in the public eye. Richard explains more:

“This personal project emerged partly from my response to the unfolding Wembley stadium fiasco and partly from my own experiences as a keen amateur sportsman. The project was born out of my own rising irritation at what I perceived to be the double standards and smugness of politicians, administrators and decision-makers...

Hereford Radiology Group - MRI Scans

The message received from Dr Paul Grech: "The Cobalt Appeal does provide a good service at a good price but it uses charity money intended for cancer treatment to subsidise its private scanning service. The radiologists in Hereford can also offer private MRI with a UK radiologist report for £200 and the income goes back to the local NHS facility to benefit NHS patients. We can also offer private x-ray, CT scan and ultrasound. Our website is www.uk-radiology.co.uk and we will be pleased to help out your members with any private scans or x-rays."

Berkshire Property Unaffordable for Many
Berkshire Property Unaffordable for Many

House prices in Berkshire are rising so high that, for many people, homeownership is simply out of the question.

The average property in Reading now costs over £200,000 and in Windsor and Maidenhead, that rises to £379,233, the BBC reports.

As a result, many people are being priced out of the market and being forced to either continue renting or to consider affordable housing, where they buy a percentage of a property and pay a subsidised rent on the remainder of the value.

The Bank of England's decision to increase the base rate to 5.25 per cent led to a sudden flurry of people seeking fixed-rate mortgages yesterday (January 11th).

Landlord Mortgages in Wokingham, Berkshire, revealed that the decision had barely been announced when the phones started ringing, with homeowners desperate to obtain favourable rates before lenders adjust their rate tables.

More Women Read Direct Mail
32% More Women Read Direct Mail than Email Marketing

Eighty-five per cent of 25 to 44-year-old women read printed direct mail marketing information, compared to just 53 per cent of women who read email marketing communications, a survey has shown.

The newly-published Customer Focus Direct Mail study by Vertis Communications suggests that marketers would be wise not to abandon print campaigns and are likely to do particularly well if they combine the two methods.
