Organic Store
Grows in Strength Thanks to Business Link Review
Business Link is encouraging local enterprises to
take advantage of its FREE Small Business Review to get a fresh perspective
from external experts on how their company is running and how best to add value
going forward .
One business that has benefited is Garlands organic
shop in Pangbourne. Run by Innes and Hannah Ballantyne, Garlands offers over
1,500 organic products, including fresh and frozen produce, beauty products,
vitamins and supplements.
Having acquired an existing business their
focus was on ensuring their ongoing success so the Ballantynes approached
Business Link for advice on how to make further improvements, signing up for a
Small Business Review. Important first steps in the process involved providing
their company financials for review during the session, and giving a clear
understanding of what they expected to achieve as a result of the Review.

New Microsoft
Building Goes Green
The newest building on the Microsoft
campus will boast a number of high-tech energy-saving features which look set
to make it one of the greenest buildings on the Thames Valley Business Park
(TVP).
The new building, due for completion in September, is the 5th to
be constructed on the Microsoft TVP site, the ultimate plan for which involves
a set of 6 buildings surrounding a central lake and grassed recreation area.
The first 3 were built in 1998, with building 4 following in 2002.
Building 5 will feature a significant number of design elements aimed
at energy-efficiency and environment-friendliness, with a particular focus on
health and safety.

New Business Centre for
Reading
Work on a new hi-tech business centre, Reading Central One,
is expected to begin later this year and will be scheduled for completion in
spring 2009. The plans for development have already been hailed as "the most
significant in Reading for nearly 20 years".
The new business centre
will be located next to the former Metal Box building on the corners of Forbury
Road and Vastern Road. Construction will commence this year on the site of the
NCP car park. The development will cover an area of 193,000 square feet.

Loans- Payment
Protection Insurance
 What is PPI? Whenever you
apply for a loan of any sort, youre usually advised to take out Payment
Protection Insurance (PPI). This insurance offers to protect us against
unforeseen circumstances, usually unemployment or sickness. You have to pay an
additional regular sum on top of the interest and loan figure. PPI claims to
offer us piece of mind, but is it just one big rip off?
Mis-selling
scandal There has been a dramatic increase in negative press
surrounding Payment Protection Insurance. One firm (the endowment specialists
Brunel Franklin Ltd) states that as many as seven million people take out PPI
each year. In most purchase agreements the PPI premium is already included,
meaning that many of us are making unnecessary payments. These payments can
vary greatly between lenders and in some cases can be as much as the interest
itself.

Proven Vehicle Tracking System
Two vehicles recovered using Cistrack
 The Innovative Asset Tracking system
Cistrack was fundamental in recovering two luxury hire cars owned by Prestige
Car Rental in Manchester.
Prestige were able to quickly track the
vehicles after one had been hired with false details and the second was used to
secure a loan from a loan shark. The second vehicle was hidden from the road,
with the street level mapping from Cistrack the owners were able to establish
the exact location and recover the car.
Cistrack is a unique tracking
device. At any time the Cistrack device can be tracked to street level using a
mobile phone or online. All other systems require the user to obtain a crime
reference number before the exact location of the stolen asset is found. This
was crucial in the recovery of the hired vehicles as both thefts would have
been considered civil matters, therefore the police would not of got involved.

Small Firms Lack Continuity
Plans
 Small businesses are not making
enough of an effort to protect themselves against the possibility of
emergencies, independent research has revealed.
Nearly half of small
firms have no plans for dealing with the after-effects of flooding, while a
third have no measures in place to help them cope after a storm.
Three
quarters of small firms have also made no attempt to make plans for dealing
with the impact of terrorism, the research commissioned by the British
Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) revealed.

Buy-to-Let Still a "Sound"
Investment
Potential property investors should not be too concerned by
the recent interest rate rises, as there is still money to be made from
buy-to-let, an expert has claimed.
The main point for landlords to
remember is to ensure that the property is occupied and, with the average
buy-to-let tenant remaining in a single property for longer than ever, many
landlords should not find that too much of a problem.
Lee Tillcock,
editor of Business Moneyfacts, said that although there have been some concerns
over the continuing sustainability and profitability of buy-to-let, rates are
still close to historic lows and the market therefore still offers "a sound
long-term investment".
