Jon Davey
Red Nose Day today, so make a donation to a good cause, doesn't have to be Red Nose, a local charity if you prefer.

When contacted last week by the BBC to ask for help with their BIG Red Sofa day out I contacted a Berkshire charity and asked if they would like to get involved. They felt it was a conflict of interest!!!

Surely charity is about team work and bringing people together, rather like we do at Business in Berkshire. We've helped connect BBC Radio Berkshire with Verbatim, who were on air at around 9am. After Vodaphone they're going to Business Link in Theale. We had made some other connections but Cheltenham proved too stong a pull for our boys at Windsor Vehicle Leasing! Not heard Business in Berkshire mentioned yet... I'd better give them a bell and offer some relevant content. I have a better idea, you guys can get involved, call 0845 900 1041 and get yourself on BBC Radio Berkshire today... and don't forget to tell them who told you!

Go check out my campaign to raise funds for Thames Hospicecare. I've raised £350 and would like to see that go over £500 before the end of the month. To help it on it's way see Offer of the Week.

Enjoy today's news and ensure you have some red nose fun... we find a bottle of Chateaux Neuf De Pape with Chinese is a great way to have some red nose fun on a Friday night!

Offer of the Week
Offer of the Week
For the last few months I have been doing a sponsored slimathon for Thames Hospicecare and I have raised £350 and would like this to top the £500. So all I need is two companies to step forward and take a special feature for half price!

Here are some reasons why you should give it a go…

Red Nose Day in Berkshire
Red Nose Day
This Friday (16th March) is Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day 2007. Tell us what you’re doing to help raise money for the charity and we’ll do our best to publish your story. Meanwhile here’s the story of one Berkshire man’s money-raising plan…

Jason Ball from Lambourn has a distinguishing feature: his extremely long hair. As long as his family, friends, and colleagues can remember, Jason has always had long hair – it actually cascades more than 12 inches down his back.

But possibly not for much longer. Because Jason plans to have his locks shorn off this Friday in aid of Comic Relief. Or at least, that was the original plan. The problem is, so many people have said they can’t imagine him without the hair that he’s decided on a different approach. Now visitors to his website can vote either for Jason to cut off his hair OR to dye it bright red instead. Either way, he’s sure to raise plenty of cash for Comic Relief.

Red Nose Day Treasure Hunt in Maidenhead
Red Nose Day
This Saturday (17th March) there is a treasure Hunt taking place in Maidenhead Town Centre in aid of Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day. Sainsbury’s are one of the main partners Red Nose Day 2007 and will be promoting the event throughout their new store and in the piazza on the 16th March.

Sainsbury’s will be opening their new flagship store on Thursday 15th March 2007 after two years of development. The store opening will also mark the re-opening of the car park that has been closed throughout the development resulting in a loss of parking space for the town centre.

The new store is expected to attract many visitors so Maidenhead Town Partnership decided to capitalise on the anticipated rush of shoppers by hosting a Red Nose Day themed Treasure Hunt from the Sainsbury’s piazza to participating stores in the town and back to the Sainsbury’s piazza.

Red Nose Day Top 10 Search Favourite
Red Nose Day
Red Nose Day has been taking the search engine charts by storm over the past week according to figures released by Lycos and Yahoo!, both of which publish ‘top search’ charts. Red Nose Day is already in the top 10 of online searches with ‘Comic Relief’ following close behind.

Red Nose Day is proving a hugely popular search, reaching 2nd place on the Lycos chart published last Thursday. Indeed it appears twice in the Yahoo! Top 10 – once for the phrase ‘red nose day’ and again for ‘comic relief’.

All this searching has naturally driven a record quantity of traffic to the Comic Relief website which apparently has scored over 1.1 million unique site visitors. Some reports claim that £4 million has already been raised via online donations – a figure that far exceeds previous years’ efforts.

A Warning About Red Noses
A Warning About Red Noses
Here’s a bizarre story that caught our eye over the weekend. We’re not entirely sure what to make of it – if this were April 1st we’d be wondering if it was genuine. But here goes: it seems that according to the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005, wearing a red nose within a certain radius of parliament could constitute an offence.

World’s Biggest Burger
A US Restaurant already famous for creating massive burgers has just added what appears to be the World’s Biggest Burger to their menu. Weighing in at a massive 123 lbs the ‘123’ Burger is set to break the current 105lb world record.

Beer Drinkers vs Wine Drinkers (r)
Do you prefer the grape to the grain? According to a recent study published in a medical journal this week, your preference for wine or beer could indicate a lot more about your personality and lifestyle than you’d imagine.

Marketing for Men (r)
Hannah sent me this yesterday. She thought it was funny. I found it patronising and demeaning but it was International Women's Day so I let it go!

Planes, cranes and automobiles in the Peruvian Amazon (r)
A good friend of mine, Chris Kirkby, will be giving a talk at RISC on 18 March about the impact of the Trans-Amazon Highway. The final stretch of the road, through the Peruvian state of Madre de Dios, is shortly due to be paved. Worryingly it passes close to two incredible biodiversity hotspots – the Tambopata National Reserve and Manu National Park.
