Good morning <07 Name>

My thoughts this week are all taken up with cars and travel. My husband and I started discussing the possibility of becoming a one-car household. We have worked out a few alternatives, checked train links and costs and not only would it be greener but we would be significantly financially better off.

No sooner had we started these preliminary discussions than the decision maybe being made for us. One of our cars needs a new gear box and is probably going to cost more than it is worth so is there any point in having the work done?

Why this ramble you may ask!?! Well this month on BinB we are focussing on environmental issues and how as businesses and individuals we can maybe make a difference. By making the decision to only have one car we will be more reliant on public transport and will have to be a bit more organised but a small sacrifice for removing the tonnes of CO2 a car produces every year from the atmosphere.

One big problem in not repairing our car is what do we do with it?? We can't throw it away! How can is be recycled?? In India cars are stripped of every useable part and the remaining metals are melted down and go back into manufacture. Can this be done in the UK? Whose responsibility is it to recycle the car; the original manufacturer or ours? How could this burden of responsibility effect car buying, manufacture and maintenance in the future? If we had to pay to recycle the car would we decide to have it fixed and keep it? If the manufacturers had to recycle would they put in measures during manufacture that makes the process simpler?

Well I think that is enough thought provoking questions for this Wednesday morning! I would be very interested to hear your comments, email me.

This week there is a mix of environmental articles on carbon offsetting and a look at Morgan's zero emission sports car among others. Plus some information on planning for future floods and the help SEEDA are offering if your business has been effected.

Offsetting Your Carbon Footprint

Scientists agree that global warming and climate change are very real issues that can only be addressed if each and every one of us takes responsible steps to reduce their CO2 emissions. But for businesses, complete avoidance of all CO2 emissions is almost impossible - but there is an answer to this dilemma : Carbon Offsetting.

So what exactly do we mean by 'Carbon Offsetting'? In the course of our everyday lives, we all do things that consume energy and produce carbon dioxide emissions - we take holiday flights, we drive our cars, we heat our homes and so on. Carbon Offsetting is a way of compensating for the emissions we produce with an equivalent carbon dioxide saving.

Why You Should Get on that Bike and RIDE

It's cheap transport, it's environmentally friendly, and it's far quicker than walking. It's also one of the best ways to get fit (and stay fit) and makes a viable and fun means of transport for the short local trips that make up most of our journeys. If you don't already own a bike - or worse, if you DO own one but it's gathering dust in the back of the shed - then please read on...

Cycling instead of using the car has got to be one of the most effective and enjoyable ways to reduce the dreaded 'carbon footprint' AND simultaneously enjoy the added benefits of valuable regular exercise.

A Zero-Emissions High-Powered Sports Car?

Think 'Sports Car' and you don't necessarily think 'environmentally-friendly'. More likely you envisage a noisy gas-guzzler built for speed clogging up the town centre with its potent exhaust emissions. But classic car firm Morgan have been developing what they claim will be the world's first emission-free sports car.

The company are famous for their traditional approach to car manufacture - their models are based on 1930s designs and are made almost entirely by hand. But if their project succeeds, they aim to produce an industry-first: a sports car that matches petrol-driven rivals for performance and handling yet generates ZERO emissions.

From Clicks to Bricks - How Online Ads Drive Offline Sales

A recent study suggests that consumers subjected to online advertising are more likely to end up researching products online yet purchasing offline. The US study, commissioned by Yahoo! and comScore, concluded that a well-integrated search and display campaign is on of the most effective ways to significantly increase offline in-store spending.

Pulling together data compiled from 175,000 participants throughout the US, the ambitious study (called 'From Clicks to Bricks: The Impact of Online Pre-Shopping on Consumer Shopping Behavior') compared results from participants who either were or were not exposed to online advertising. Ultimate spending results were tracked at the 5 major shopping chains.

Virtual Office Support?

Swamped, over-stretched businesses in need of support have the option of taking on an employee to relieve the pressure. However most small businesses shy away from this option and continue to try and complete everything with their available resources. This can lead to mounting stress levels and the increased likelihood of important actions being delayed or even forgotten.

By spending time on back office work, small businesses and owner managers can end up being so busy that the standard of delivery of their product/service is diluted. Few people go into business to do admin!

Home Information Packs

Home Information Packs (HIPS)
August 1st saw the launch of the Home Information Packs, or "HIPS" in England and Wales. These packs will be compulsory for all properties on the market with four bedrooms or more. Originally due in June, the "HIPS" have already received much criticism. As a result of this criticism and the need for domestic energy assessors, the HIPS will be slowly phased in starting with larger properties.

For the buyer
The whole idea of a Home Information Pack is to make the process of selling a property quicker and easier. Potential buyers will have all the important information they need in one document, including:...
