Good morning <07 Name>

Thank you so much for all the lovely emails and calls I got last week saying how much people had enjoyed the newsletter.

We are continuing this week with an environmental focus. Why not Calculate your Carbon Footprint, mine is 10.02 tonnes, the average is 10.96. To stop climate change every person needs to reduce his or her emissions to roughly 2.5 tonnes per year so I have a lot of work to do. Luckily we also have an article about How to Reduce your Carbon Footprint.

Last week I caught an episode of 'India with Sanjeev Bhaskar' on the BBC. It was a fabulous look at bustling India, a place I have always read much about and have dreamed of going to one day. I was intrigued to discover that they have a very tight recycling policy, no rubbish is collected unless it has been sorted. You can read more in our article Recycling - The Indian Way.

Next month I am hoping to be launching a BinB monthly networking breakfasts on the first Wednesday of the month. After my appeal in last weeks newsletter I have had quite a few people emailing me to say they would be interested in coming along so I am sure it is going to be a great event. If you are interested send me an email.

I heartily recommend being a part of the online BinB community, since I have had my account my client base has grown because of the amazing exposure being a part of the network has given me, both in the local business community and to a wider audience searching on Google.

If you want to reach thousands of potential customers and get excellent rankings on Google and other major search engines then a Business in Berkshire SILVER Membership can help you achieve all of the above - and much more. It's the perfect online public relations package for busy organisations with limited time.

Calculating Your Carbon Footprint

More and more businesses are taking responsibility for their Carbon Footprint. Measured in units of carbon dioxide (CO2), the carbon footprint reflects the impact our activities have on the environment as a result of the greenhouse gases we produce.

Despite the growing awareness, global warming - the gradual increase in temperature of the earth's surface - has been with us for a long time: at least since the industrial revolution. The problem is that as we lead ever-more sophisticated lifestyles surrounded by technological innovations it's inevitable we consume more energy than our ancestors did say 100 years ago. It's not just the developed western countries that are to blame; as technology spreads to countries in Africa and Asia, more and more carbon emissions are produced: improved lifestyles mean increased energy consumption.

How to Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

There's a lot you can do - as a business or individual - straightaway to reduce your carbon footprint. Things you can start doing today to reduce your contribution to global warming. In most cases, it won't cost you any money at all - and may in fact save you money. Let's take a closer look...

There are plenty of small steps you can take to help reduce your carbon footprint. For example, turning electrical items off when not in use: lights, TV, DVD player, Hi Fi, computer and so on. You could also try turning down the hot water setting on your boiler - just 2 degrees can make a significant saving. And while you're there, check your central heating settings too.

Recycling - The Indian Way

Although we are getting better at it, here in the UK we are relative newcomers to the art of recycling. Compared to our European neighbours we still score fairly low in the recycling stakes. But to really get to grips with recycling and to learn how it SHOULD be done, we need to look further afield...

India recycles a massive proportion of its waste and has done for many years. In a country where disposable income is traditionally low, innovative solutions to recycling have become the norm. Cars that are beyond repair are routinely stripped for component parts rather than simply scrapped. In schools for example, pupils are encouraged to use old exercise books as rough paper. Compost is made from kitchen leftovers. Cans are crushed and recycled.

FSB Calls for Flood Review

Although Gordon Brown has announced the government will set up a review into the problems suffered by businesses as a result of the recent floods, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is suggesting an independent review into the floods - without political involvement.

Looking after the interests of small businesses across the UK, the FSB has lobbied government with the aim of provoking an independent review of the flood situation. Many small businesses have been effectively 'put on hold' since the floods. The government recognizes this and seems keen to tackle the issues head on in order to learn lessons for the future.

DO YOUR BIT A WORK

Is your company on track to save 20% on energy consumption, 20% on water use and 50% on waste generation? If not then you are missing out on making your business more sustainable - both environmentally and economically. The New WEEE Regulations

The recently-introduced Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations put additional responsibilities on producers and distributors of electrical equipment. The regulations mean both groups now have a responsibility to take back electrical equipment at the end of its useful life. How does this affect consumers, producers, and suppliers?

The aim of the regulations is to minimise the amount of WEEE that was previously being thrown out along with general rubbish as well as reduce landfill and protect those who treat equipment. In keeping with today's environmentally aware world, it is hoped that the public and businesses alike will now dispose of their electronic and electrical waste in a more environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient way. With the introduction of the new regulations, producers of electronic and electrical equipment have had to take on the cost of collecting, treating and recycling WEEE.

Postal Strike Impacts Small Businesses

A recent report by the British Chambers of Commerce reveals that over £2.5 million of small business post is being delayed every time there is a postal strike. The BCC used data compiled for the 2006 Competitive Market Review to calculate the figure based on how much franked mail is typically sent by small businesses throughout the UK every day.

According to the 2006 Review by industry watchdog Postcomm, SMEs in the UK send 8,219,178 of franked mail every day. Costs range from 22p to 32p which means a total value of between £1,808,219 and £2,630,136 is delayed each day of a postal strike.
