Good

It's
International Women's Day. 422 events going off around the
world! Mary Flavelle is running an event at the weekend, see below. Ute ran an
event last night and if you find yourself not going to an organised event,
connect with a friend over coffee or glass of water and discuss how things have
improved for women.
For next week we would like to promote any Red Nose
events you've got going on. We're working with BBC Radio Berkshire and there
could be an opportunity to do your elevator pitch live on air! More next
week...
The Importance of International
Women's Day
International Women's Day on 8 March is an occasion that has
been marked by women's groups around the world for over 90 years.
It is
a day that inspires women everywhere to achieve their full potential whilst
celebrating major achievements in the struggle for equality, justice, and
peace. Recognised by the United Nations, some countries even have a national
holiday on 8 March!

 Independent locally-owned businesses
play an essential role in maintaining a lively local economy by helping to keep
financial resources in the local area rather than at some distant corporate
headquarters. Whats more, they use the goods and services of other local
businesses.
Sometimes it seems as if our city centres are becoming
clones of each other the same faceless names can be found in almost
every high street in the country: Tescos, Boots, Top Shop, Next, Starbucks...
the list goes on. In most cases these big names follow a set formula which
dictates everything from the style of the building, the colour of the staff
uniforms, the décor, and the products on offer. With their increased
economies of scale, these big guys are laying down a serious challenge for
smaller independent businesses who have to rely on customer loyalty and the
personal touch to stay in business.
All of which poses a threat to local
communities by contributing to the steady loss of social, cultural and economic
strength. Small and locally owned businesses are seen by many as the bridge to
a more sustainable and just society - the mainstay of the community's economy.

Landlord tax crackdown "a storm in a
teacup"
The new HM Revenue & Customs checks into the
earnings of buy-to-let landlords are unlikely to have an adverse effect on the
market, experts have claimed.
The move is the latest in a string of
HMRC attempts to clamp down on tax avoidance and will involve a computer system
searching through letting advertisements, as well as a hotline for people to
call and blow the whistle on known offenders.
Landlords could end up
facing a hefty fine if they pay the wrong amount of tax, but Malcolm Harrison
of the Association of Residential Letting Agents (Arla) insists that it is
merely a "storm in a teacup" and should not have major repercussions.
