Networking News Business in Berkshire

Good morning <Name>
Jon Davey
Looks like we'll be snowed in for a week! The dog really enjoyed his walk this morning and then Charlie and I built a snowman. You could tell he was a posh southern snowman because we used grapes for eyes instead of coal.

We're reinforcing our call for innovation stories. Let us know what you've got cooking.

I'm also doing a spot of forward planning. Business Networking is our call for March. In giving you a flavour for this, Hugh has written an article about BNI. He's a member, I'm not keen on the concept of just one person in a group, I believe in choice but credit where it's due. Gavin Bain has built one of the most successful referral networks in the UK and now he's invading France. Vive la rouge!!

For those that enjoy sharing their wisdom, Yomping the Nation kicked off this week and they are looking for business experts with a discipline and/or sheer determination.

Enjoy!

Calling all Innovators - February is Innovation Month
Calling all Innovators
As part of our ongoing plan to develop and grow Business in Berkshire, we will be focusing on a specific topic every month through 2007, kicking off with ‘Innovation’ in February. This doesn’t mean there will be no articles about anything else, rather that we will aim to bring you stories that have innovation as their key element.

At the beginning of this year we introduced daily newsletters. You told us the original weekly format was often too long and you would prefer the information in bite-size chunks. In response, we switched to the daily format which has proved a success and we’ve had plenty of positive feedback from you. Last week we announced the daily newsletters would have a different core focus every day as follows:

Calling all Innovators

Business experts required to help mould the workforce of tomorrow
Inspiring New Ventures
Whether your business background is 20 years of international trading or 20 months of start-up trickery, your knowledge and experience could make a world of difference to students about to enter the world of work.

We would therefore like to invite you to join us at YTN07 to inspire and be inspired by some of the regions most enterprising students.

But what exactly is YTN07?
YTN07 is a UK-wide business challenge involving over 100 UK universities, making it the biggest competition of it’s kind. In it’s second year, this challenge is designed to give students from university a greater level of commercial awareness, entrepreneurial spirit and employability skills for when they leave education and enter the workplace. Essentially it is a cross between The Apprentice and Dragons Den.

Build Your Own Sales Team Through Networking
Sales Team Through Networking
Networking is one of the most effective ways to market your business by spreading the word about what you do. There are plenty of business networking groups out there, all of which have something positive to offer. Business Network International – or BNI – is the biggest and most successful networking organisation in the World today.

BNI works on the principle of ‘givers gain’: if I refer some business in your direction, you’re more likely to do the same for me. Imagine it like this: you have a team of fellow business people actively promoting YOUR business to their own customers – whilst you do the same for them. It’s similar to having your own sales team out there every day, working for you and your business.

Each BNI group (‘chapter’) typically includes 20 or so members who meet once a week for an early-morning breakfast. Meetings follow a structured agenda and each member gives a 1 minute presentation to fellow members, highlighting the sort of business they are looking for. The most exciting part of the meeting comes towards the end, when referrals are passed between members.

TVEP’s latest recruits
APS Chartered Surveyors have become the latest organisation to join Thames Valley Economic Partnership (TVEP), the business network which helps maintain the area as a vibrant and dynamic economic region.

Originally starting out in London nearly 13 years ago, APS have found themselves branching out into the Thames Valley after working for a number of high profile clients in the region. Andrew Gower, Director heading up the Thames Valley team, said: “Being in the Thames Valley enables us to physically respond rapidly to our clients in the area – accessibility is key, especially when projects demand for us to be onsite at the drop of a hat”.

Brits Complacent About Identity Theft
Brits Complacent About Identity Theft
Britons are failing to protect themselves against identity theft, a credit reference agency has warned.

A third of Britons are still throwing away personal documents such as bank statements and receipts without shredding them, said Callcredit, citing new figures obtained from the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

The figures also revealed that a quarter of people do not check their statements on a regular basis, while four out of five have never obtained a copy of their credit reference file.

Business Networks in Berkshire
Business Networks in Berkshire
During March I am looking to focus on business networks across Berkshire.

I would like to hear from any business networks out there that would like to tell 3500 business people what they can offer potential members.

This is best told through testimonials from existing members talking about how the network has helped them achieved their goals. This doesn’t need to be measured financially, it could be that the member was looking for somewhere to hang out with like minded individuals for a few hours a month, talking shop and being encouraged to share both problems and ideas.
