Last autumn O2 invited small businesses in London to enter the O2 Inspiration Award Prize competition. They were inundated with entries from a broad spectrum of businesses and age groups. The panel of judges included local entrepreneurs Adam Balon one of the founders of Innocent Drinks and Karen Darby who started Simply Switch.

The winner was eCourier an express logistics provider – the world’s first online delivery courier service.

They were awarded a £100,000+ advertising campaign in the Evening Standard.

Case Study: Win & retain more high value clients

“To continue business as usual was not an option. The focus of the Sales force needed to radically change for the company to be successful.”

MH, Managing Director

The business
A £40M turnover ICT company based in the south of England that had survived the ICT industry downturn but had lost some of their energy and direction.

Customers were increasingly viewing their products and services as a commodity and competition was increasing. As a result prices were dropping and some long term customers were going elsewhere. In spite of this revenues and profits were continuing to slowly grow but this was dependant upon winning one unplanned large “bluebird” project each year.

Their challenge
Eliminate the dependency on unplanned projects and build a Sales strategy for sustainable revenue and profit growth. Winning a higher proportion of bids was essential along with increasing average revenue per account. At the same time the company also needed to reduce costs and be able to flex as needs changed.

A cautionary tale...
A cautionary tale
At one time or another every business owner has wondered why one business will be successful and prosper for years and another one will struggle just to survive. I am about to tell you the ONE secret that all successful business owners know and have kept secret all these years. This secret is so simple and yet so many people are ignorant of it.

But, first, a story:

A few weeks ago I visited an electronics retailer, part of a national chain. I’ll avoid shopping there again. I wanted to buy the equipment needed to set up a wireless network so that members of my family could use the internet at the same time. I’ve never installed a network and wanted to go the wireless route because I’m thinking about buying a laptop.

A cautionary tale...

House Price Gains Low in Berkshire
House Price Gains Low in Berkshire
Berkshire has recorded one of the lowest average house price gains in the UK over the last five years, new research has shown.

The latest figures from Halifax reveal that house prices have risen by 42 per cent since 2001, with only Hampshire and Wiltshire - both 41 per cent - recording lower average gains.

However, the county remains one of the most expensive in the UK, along with Surrey and Hertfordshire. The same three counties were the most expensive in 2001 as well.

Painless Business Facilitated Workshops
Painless Business Facilitated Workshops
Painless Business offers innovative solutions and coaching which take the pain out of running your business and improve your chance of success.

The portfolio of solutions on offer include facilitated workshops where the entire team are taken through a number of exercises that improve the levels of communication and lead to a clear vision for the business. Through their participation in the workshops every member of the team feels they have contributed to and are a part of that vision.

James Butler said “Within small businesses there is often no mechanism for the staff to contribute to the business strategy and equally no way for the directors to communicate their vision. We take the team out of their daily routine and create an environment where everyone can feel relaxed and discuss issues or ideas.”

How to find your dream property
How to find your dream property
How to find your dream property
In my first article (Mortgages for first time buyers, where to start?), I briefly discussed the whole property buying process. Now that you know the basics, it’s time to start searching!

Where are properties advertised?
The majority of people advertise their property through an estate agent. We’ve all see the property pages in the newspapers and countless estate agents dotted around towns. Nowadays you can search the Internet as well. Some people do the advertising themselves, so it may be worth asking friends and family.

As estate agents aren’t regulated, you need to make sure that you go through a reputable company. The best ones are usually members of a trade association.
