Good morning

In March I was asked to be a judge for the Yomping the Nations South East heat. Teams from Universities across the South East came together to battle it out in a business competition. Reading University won the heat in no small part thanks to Lamide Adediji. Business in Berkshire rewarded the heat winners with Business in Berkshire Membership. Last week we heard from Lewis Black, this week it's Lamide's turn to ask for your feedback. A job for you Mr Quinn.

Sharing experience and expertise helps everyone. One of the things I really like about the guys at Absolute Health and Safety is their willingness to share. They will tell you all you need to do to ensure your business is fit for purpose... all you have to do is take the actions. Then you might want them to project manage for a small fee to ensure you get things right.

Looks like VoIP is a clear winner with businesses of all sizes so which solution will you be using? I think I feel a BinB survey coming on. And soon you'll be VoIPing your bank and they say press 1 to buy that designer top for TK Maxx but will you?

Figured some more feedback on the budget wouldn't hurt. One of the stories is from our friends in the North, an accountancy firm in the Lake District. See, wherever you are based, you can do businesses in Berkshire!

When you have a business pain, like where to buy that motivational pen, the one with the naked lady on it! Then what will you do, phone a friend, pick up the Yellow Pages or simply Google. I put it to you (throw back to last week!) that you would turn to your PC, permanently switched on and connected via high speed broadband to a world of knowledge and fire up your home page which, in the majority of cases, will have a Google search facility only a click away. Five seconds later it will take you to where you want to go. It is only concerned about Geography in a national sense, outside of that it will increasingly deliver pages fit for purpose.

In March 87,035 visitors looked at a total of 391,491 pages. That's around 4.5 pages each visitor. If I were to sell the top spot on every page to the highest bidder then a single advert would be generating somewhere in the region of £8,000 (£20 per 1000 page visits is the current model). We have no interest in BinB becoming some advertising hell hole, preferring to have a clean, quality approach with our Members paying for "white linen cloths" on which to present their wares.

Isn't it time you joined up?

Quick, before the Germans buy us as they have an appreciation for quality merchandise! They bought Bigmouthmedia recently and rumour has it they are now they are looking to buy the Grand Canyon?

Check out the fun links right at the bottom of the email, they were April fool jokes. I was going to run with them without saying anything but if I remember rightly, because it's now the 3rd, the joke would be on me!

Enjoy...

Why UK Businesses Love VoIP

VoIP technology (Voice over Internet Protocal) has become a clear favourite with UK businesses thanks to its low cost and high quality service according to a recent survey.

In a recent survey conducted by Business Intelligence, 256 UK firms were asked why they had chosen to switch to VoIP. Over 50% claimed cost savings were their primary reason although many organisations added that business benefits were also a big attraction.

The World's First Mobile Banking

Mobile subscribers may soon be able to enjoy the benefits of transferring cash via their mobile phones: a world first. Where is this happening? In Kenya - a country where more than 80% of the population are excluded from the formal financial sector.

Known as M-Pesa, the new service has been developed by Vodaphone who own a 35% share of Safaricom, Kenya's biggest mobile operator. Mobile use in Kenya has been growing rapidly in recent years (as with most African countries), with over 8 million subscribers nationally.

Small Berlin based SME delivers glass for Grand Canyon Skywalk

The horseshoe-shaped "Skywalk" that is cantilevered off a 1200 meter precipice in Arizona is something of a window on the Grand Canyon. The bowed glass that gives visitors a bird's eye view of the canyon and the Hualapai Reservation below came from a tiny firm in Berlin.

Döring Glas is a classic example of the small and mid-sized firms known as the "Mittelstand", which is a major engine for technical innovation and jobs in the German economy.
